Default M6 or A4?

I have been test driving ls1 camaros. God Damn these cars are fast! I drove this used 6 speed and I couldnt believe how fast I got to 100mph. I love how the close ratios in the trans keep the engine in the powerband. It was amazing how hard it was pulling in third.

Anyway, I cant make up my mind on whether to get a 6 speed or an automatic. I know nothing beats an A4 with a yank pt4400. Still, the 6 speed are funner to drive. Also, I know about problems with clutches, syncros, and the weak 10 bolt and I still want to get a 6 speed.

Those of you who have 6 speeds do you regret it? Are they more problems than their worth? If you dont powershift will the clutch and tranny last? Can an A4 with a converter be as much fun as a manual?

It seems like you answered your own question, you said you really want an M6. Whether an A4 will be as much fun to drive as an M6 depends on what you really want. I have an A4 and I like it better than an M6 but that's me, what you like and think is more fun to drive is strickly up to you. Buy the car you really like best be it M6 or A4.

98 A4
Powerloaded
Donaldson Blackwing
Pro Torque 2400
3.42 gears

to me any A4 with a nice stall feels like a M6 lol... I mean with the converter it sorta feels like the car is slipping the clutch out

get the A4 with a high stall and you will love it.. plus kick major *** on the track... OH and the street!!!

My first LS1 was a M6, and I absolutely loved it. Then I found LS1.com, started reading about the big converters, and had to have one, so I traded the car in on an A4, installed all of the bolt-ons, a TP4400, and it still wasn't as fun as a M6. So, last month, I bought another M6, and put the A4 car back stock. Believe me, 1.6 60fts were fun, but this M6 is a blast to drive, just alot more fun driving around than an A4, and lets see an A4 run a "real" gear (4.30 to 4.56) with their girly "single" overdrive Seriously, for driving fun, nothing beats banging through the gears of an M6. My old car went from 13.40s to 12.80s with no other changes than going from 3.42s to 4.11s, and lost no driveability, IMO even gained some, as 6th gear became more useable. Of course, all of the time I was beating up on 6 speeds at the track with my TP4400, now I have to watch out myself Good luck, Shawn

Mitch

You are right, I want a 6speed. I am just afraid everything behind the flywheel will need to be replaced. Big $$$$$. talkin clutch, driveshaft, 10 bolt. Even the synchros might need some work.

Tom and 98 auto

I agree. I want to experience some 1.5 60ft times. Id probably get a yank tp 4400 or vig #7 right off the bat. What nice about the autos is they dont kill the 10 bolt even with a good converter. Its gotta be fun pedaling an auto for a good launch.

Shawn

I hope I dont change my mind if I get an auto. I think an auto would be cheaper so thats where Im leaning to.

Today I am gonna look at a 2000 black z28 auto with 60 thousand miles. Its a stripper model with no options. Light and cheap . They are askin 13 but I think I can get them down to 12. We will see what happens.

Thanks guys for sharing your experiences and help me make up my mind.

talk to you later

I HIGHLY recommend an A4... After a hard day at work, which would you rahter do? Put it in drive and go, or hit the lcutch, put it in first, woops traffic hit the clutch put it in neutral, uh oh traffics starting up again, hit the cluthc put it in first....

I've had both and here is my experience:

My first LS1 was an A4 which was ok for a while but once I took a ride in an M6 I was hooked. I even tried the converter thing and still thought my A4 was boring and not much fun to drive. Plus, I just don't like the way converted cars feel(looseness & louder revs) during normal cruising.

So...Two weeks ago, I finally got rid of my A4 and bought a new M6 that I couldn't be happier with. I do eventually plan to modify it/even run it on the track some, but not to the point of having to worry about replacing many parts. It'll mostly just be my daily-driver/FUN car. When I want mostly 1/4 mile performance, I'll get another A4.

With that said, if you really want the M6, then GET the M6! If your more concerned about drag-racing/consistency, then get yourself the A4. I just wish I hadn't made that mistake the first time.

Mike

I changed my mind. Actually the car I looked at changed my mind. I was told on the phone it was an auto but it was a M6. The car was optioned exactly the way if I were to order one. The only option is the monsoon sound system and cd player. Should be pretty light. I loved the black paint and interior. So I bought the car.

I love it so far. Double clutch downshifts into first at 40mph are fun. The trans is easy to shift smoothly. I think the 10 bolt will last awhile if the car is driven with some finesse. The 10bolt dont seem to like hard shifts.

I have a couple of grand left over for mods. Cant decide how to start. 4.10 gears would be nice but thats gonna have to wait until the moneys there for a 12 bolt. Probably start with the exhaust and headers.

Anyway, I think I will be happy with the 6speed. Its a blast to drive.

Well, this might be after the fact, but wanted to give some input also.

I will shortly have my M6 converted to a built A4 with moderate stall, but there is a reason for it. I love driving the M6 (no doubt about that), but once you start doing the modifications for serious power, M6s break things at the track. Even built things.

With an auto, I will get:
1) Hopefully a 0.3 to 0.5 ET improvement
2) Launches that won't break driveshafts, wheel studs, etc.
3) No delayed action if caught by surprise on the highway.
4) No more f**king leg cramps from holding in the McLeod twin clutch in traffic jams.

I lose:
1) Precise control of the gears
2) Fuel econmy as the 0.67 OD will not be as good on the highway as the 0.50 of the M6
3) Gear-banging bragging rights
4) Traction at surprisingly high speeds once the stall bangs the tires.

But my car is seriously modded, which is something to keep in mind (see sig).

I don't think 4.11's are very strong in a 10 bolt, 3.73's are a little better.
