Default Identify part from location & description..

Just to the REAR of the oil pan, & inbetween where the headers come down, (starter is on the right if looking from the rear of the car towards the front), just left to that, there is a bell housing on which is a black rubber gromet removable cover.

When the cover is pried off, it looks like there is a "clamp" w/ a bolt, that goes around a splined shaft....

WHAT is the clamp called & what is the splined shaft it is clamping to, and if you know, can you describe their functions..

Might help if you specified which vehicle year/make/model.

I can't think of anything on a LS1 F-body that is to the left of the starter but to the right of the oil pan because the starter is wedged up against the pan with gears meshign into the transmission.

If referring ot the left side of the oil pan, there's nothing there but an oil filter that I recall.

As for the whole backside of the engine, there is the 4l60e sitting right there.

what whould be the effect if this bolt was loose or not even present?

That is the clamp that holds the torque tube drive shaft input shaft to the flexplate.
The clamp is slip type to allow the bolt to tighten the flexplate drive hub around the torque tube spline.
it holds the engine power to the torque tube

It would Rattle around and can make a noise, that your Knock sensors might pick up and put your KR into effect

Would there be less of a hit from the converter?
Higher than normal 60' times?

The problem here was that your knock sensors were seeing a problem. When you computer saw this it was pulling timing away from your motor. Thus creating less power and slower times. This I can see was a pretty expensive lesson. Glad that you got it all fiqured out. Vince

Yes, alot of time, labor & effort was spent...
But I didn't know anything about this until it was pointed out to me..

All I know is that a new converter & tranny were installed & then my car ran 2/10 slower with the same stall converter, so that was my focus....
