Default How many pump vanes in a 4L60E?

This question is geared tworads the tranny sponsors on the board. I would like real world experience, not "My buddy Darryl..." So, how many pump vanes(type of stator) do you builder types recommend and why? I have heard 13 alleviates irregular flow up past 5200rpm yet obviously the extra 3 vanes (over 10) has to decrease some structural integrity of the stator it'self. Tried search, no luck. Thanks for your experience and advice.

We run 10 vane pumps for 3 simple reasons.

Less holes machined in anything adds to its strength.

13 vanes rotors produce less volume per pulse by design.

Have not seen a 10 vane break yet. When run with a modulator we do not see irregular high rpm pressures. Our test mule is shifting well above 6k rpm.

There are differing opinions on each unit, we run the one we have the most confidence in.

They either have 10 or 13 depending on whom you speak with one is better than the other , Personally they both seem to work well ,Some testing I have read about has shown the 13v actually having slightly less volume capabilities than its 10 vane counterpart though I have never done this test myself i do understand the reasoning the area of the 13v is unchanged though there is more mechanism in the pump some more parts less area for fluild is the idea.
Personally though I have seen no down or up that makes any significant different between the two I have seen very high powered units using both and doing very well.
My advice keep whichever one you have and spend the money on some other more needed or useful upgrade

Not a tranny guy, but my builder (30 yrs experience) said that the 4L60E should have a 13 vane pump. I have no idea, but when I pull mine apart and rebuild it I'll be sure to post what I find.

I will say this that the 13 vane pumps are much quieter on the dyno. We do build some of the best pumps I have ever seen. I personally have tested both set ups and do not see a loss of max line pressure with either. The only issue I see is with the 10 vane setup is noisy and believe this is a pressure noise. I feel this can not be good for the life of the pump. I also find that the 13 vane setup makes more cooler flow and pressure. We do in house machine all of our pumps to insure a true surface along with an equal depth of the pump pocket. I do find oem pumps to be very inconsistent. Vince

As i said I haven't personally see this max line drop only read about it a few times but even if its there would consider it minor either pump makes adequate pressure. I have noted that the 13v is slightly quieter however also if this is and important point though in most performance cars the overall noise of the car probably makes it a "mute" pun intended point.
I would still say that if i was building myself on a budget I would put my money in other areas such as upgrading the boost valve, PR, spring, Pump slide spring and bushing since either pump should be able to do the job
