Default 1st, 2nd, 3rd, NO 4th??????

Took the car to the track lastnight and the tranny was off and on. Hit the limiter on the 2-3 and wouldn't shift. Second run was perfect. Third run, did my burnout and rolled out and car backfired and stalled. Turned it back on and again, hit limiter on 2-3 and wouldn't shift. Going home, put it in drive and it wouldn't go and just revved. Manuelly shifting, 1st,2nd,3rd, NO 4th. Limped home in 3rd no problem. Now my question is my car shifts fine in 3rd and I'm thinking that my 3-4 clutch pack is O.K. since I can still shift into 3rd. Did I just let my tranny overheat and it went into limp mode or is it something else. I didn't get to drive it today to see if it's o.k. or not.

Yeah, if I manuelly shift it to 3rd it's fine, if I move it from 3rd to 4th it just revs. Sticking it in 4th from the get go will not move at all.

Yeppers, and as you drive it now, you are burning up your over-run clutches and making a lot of heat........

Update.....

A tranny guy I've been talking to told me to take the car out and see if the car will go in gear. Well sure enough I took a short trip to the store and it shifted like if nothing happened. He told me that while hot lapping the car at the track, my tranny went into limp mode due to overheating. Now I don't know if any of you have heard of this before, but it's back to normal as far as I know. What do you guys think????

Well limp mode is certainly possble but you said it would not move on the od position in limp mode it would move but with considerable throttle since it would actually be in third gear and it would not change gears automatically at all

are you sure you're not confusing 4th gear with lockup? by meaning it shifts into 4th gear but won't lock up? the trans goes 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 4th locked. maybe you just mean the 4th locked up wasn't engaging? i'm assuming you know what lockup is, but it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense and the only way i can see this possible is if you've confused 4th gear with 4th gear locked up.

Well my understanding was it would only move in the 1-2-3 positions but not in the od or fourth position

Exactly. Putting the shifter in 4th like normal, the car wouldn't even get into 1st. Today, It went into 4th revved a little then locked up. I'll try and make a longer trip tommorrow to see if the Tranny Gods did indeed give me a miracle.
