Just bought 99T/A A4, What gear do I have?
Hi, how can I tell which gear I have? I have the 150MPH spedo, in the old days(1995-96) that told you you had the 3.23's. Is it still same on the 99's? Or do you have to look on the door codes? If so what codes do I look for? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,

Automatic cars have 3.23's, Manuals have 3.42's, i think some auto's had 2.73's or something like that, but they arent as common. Check door codes, im not 100% what the codes are...

Rick, here is what you are looking for: Code GU2 designates 2.73 gears, and if you see Code GU5, you have 3.23 gears. Look inside your glove box for these codes; not your door.
If for some reason the codes are missing, here's another way to tell. 2.73 cars get a steel driveshaft, and 3.23 cars get an aluminum peice. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Does anyone know which gears came in each different year model 4th gen A4's? I've heard of 2.73's, 3.23's and 3.42's. Nobody seems to know for sure (with good reason) and I'm curious.

I think that all A4's came from the factory with 2.73 gears unless you opted for the performance axle package; then you get 3.23 gears. I've never seen a factory 3.42 automatic.
I just checked on Chevy's website. Problem is (I'm sure you all know), that I can only get the info for 2002 models. Anyway, they list 3.23 and 3.42 as options and 3.08 as standard. The 3.42 is only an option for non Z/28's if I read it correctly. 2.73's aren't listed. But again, it's only 1 year model. Now I wonder when they stopped using that gear.
