Default Considering another converter swap. ST3500 - Vig3600

Thoughts?

Originally went with the ST3500 because I had planned on spraying, but decided to go the bolton route. I love the converter, but I just dont seem to be putting down the numbers like I want to.

Daily driver, PT4400 is a tad loose for me.

Related mods are ST3500, Hooker LT's/ORY/Borla, Direct Flo-lid, Eibach pro-kit, home boxed LCA's/panhard, !swaybar, ET Streets, dropped about 65lbs off the car, so far..

Best 60' is 1.71, best ET, 7.97 @ 88. 12.50's-60's in the summer heat.

The bolton/Lucky #7's seem to be cutting mid/high 1.5's all day long..I'm pretty confident I'll shave .08 or a tenth off the 60'.

Shooting for 11's (7.50's or so) with boltons (still have alot left), should I stick with the ST3500, or go ahead and swap to the Vig?

TIA,
Dan

Sounds like a job for the PT4000!

I think your estimate on the 60' is pretty good. I would have guessed .05 - .1

You'll probably gain more in the 1/8 than in the 1/4 as the ST will probably make up some of that up top.

I suggest buying your other bolt-ons for now and see how you run at the end of September in better weather. If it's not getting the job done, then switch. I'd go for a YTP 4400 if you switch. Buy Edit and raise your part throttle shift points. It won't be any looser than a Vig 3600 with stock part throttle shift points.

LOL, I'm in the same boat as you. I've got a ST3500 in my heavy SS too, but I've cut 1.62 60' times with it. Maybe it's my 3.73 gears that help. I like racing from a roll so there's no way I would consider the Vig 3600. That would be like losing 10-15 rwhp over the ST3500. I'm going to switch to the Pro Thruster 4000. The tighter clearances of the 4000 will allow me to still spray a lot plus I won't give up any rwhp to my excellent ST3500.

For all around racing, you just can't beat a Yank Pro Thruster.

The PT4000 seems interesting, I wasnt even aware they made a Pro Thruster with a 4000 stall. Seems that not too many people are running that converter, any reason for this?

From what I can tell, it is a 2.2 STR, correct?

With the ST3500/3.23, daily driving, I see around 2K RPM. How much worse will the PT be with a 3.73 gear? 2300 or so? The ST3500 is completely streetable in my opinion.

What kind of shift extension will i see? I usually hold ~4500 R's with the ST.

Just running through the numbers, I think it would be a safe bet to assume I'd see 1.60-1.64 60's and drop ~12 more hundreths in the 1/8 with this converter. A 7.85 in this heat as is would make it worth my while, should be a deep 7.7X when it cools off. Finish off my boltons, and low 7.5X's should be attainable, dropping a few more pounds off the car.

Just curious as to why nobody's running this thing

Thanks again guys

The main reason why most people get the Pro Thruster 4400 or 4600 is that they want the best. Those converters are the best for running n/a, no questions asked. But I like running nitrous too. It's hard to find a race converter that is stellar on motor and good on the spray too. The ST3500 is about the best compromise converter there is. Good on motor and vert good on the spray. The PT4000 is great on motor and good on spray. It's just not as streetable because of its higher stall and lower stall torque ratio.

The shift extension should be around 5300 with the Pro Thruster which is about a 500 rpm improvement over my ST3500. This will make me faster on motor. My rev limiter is 6800. That means I can turn my motor really tight when on the spray, making the converter OK for nitrous.

From a streetability standpoint, 3.73 gears and raised part throttle shift points will greatly enhance your driveability of a Pro Thruster 4000. Just make sure your tires are fresh (and sticky LOL).

Actually the STR of the PT4000 is 2.86. Mine's going to be here next week so I'll let you know how it works out.

Since I'll be spraying eventually, I'm sticking with the 3.23's or maybe 3.42's if I can't hold second through the 1/8th mile.

I was riding the pine about putting this converter in but I'm going to do it now. I'm running the SY3500 FYI which sucks for the track with ET Streets and 3.23 gears.

coming from a vig3600 owner here i'd keep the ST3500 like ragtopp said and wait till fall. A good friend of mine went 11.93@113 with that, 3.73's and full bolt ons on et streets. The same day I was running 11.95@112 with 3.23's and nittos cutting 1.58-1.64's

his 60's were around 1.66's i think also

the vig3600 is a beast down low and off the line. But the ST3500 pulls like a mother from the 1/8th up where the vig doesnt! From a roll the ST3500 rocks, and my vig sucks cause it lacks efficency

you might wanna look at a YTP4000 or 4200

but for you I dont think the swap would be worth the time. You may gain a tenth or so, but your top end wont be as great. ST3500's usually trap 113-114 with full bolt ons. Vig 3600's usually are in the 112 range so that shows the efficieny difference there

I love my vig and if you were starting from stock i'd say get it. But since you have the 3500 already it wont help ya much
