Possible Tranny Problem
I'm fairly new to the board (only posted 1 or 2 other posts, I believe) and want to begin by making a statement that I know I have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to trannys. This way, we can start from scratch and I dont end up making myself look like an idiot.
I'll start off with the basic information: It's a 2002 Trans Am with the 4-spd automatic tranny (dont know the specific model number for this tranny). It has somewhere close to 44,000 miles on it.
Hopefully some of this will help diagnose my problem. I've driven it as a daily driver for three years, and have gotten into autocrossing a bit in the past year or so. I don't tend to drive the car hard at all on the road, but of course I bump it up when on the course.
Now to the Problem: A Transmission Whine
I dont know if weather has anything to do with it, but I woke up this morning and it was about 36 F outside. I drove for about 10 minutes to an autocross event and parked it for close to 4.5-5 hours. I then jumped in my car and staged for starting. About half way through the course, the tranny started whining. I finished the run at a somewhat slower pace and parked it. I check level, color, and consistency of the fluid and everything was fine. Then i got in and started driving around the lot and the whine dissappeared. (It had even done it when i backed into my parking spot before.) The second run it started again, and I immediately drove back and parked it. On the way home it was still whining a little bit (barely audible over the exhaust, could have even possibly been there before without me noticing.)
It never got as loud as it was on the first run, but I am still worried that something might be going wrong. Anyone have any idea how deep I'm in?
I appreciate the help.
Mike
That doesn't sound good. Any recommendations as to how to check the problem? I went out to the grocery store tonight and could still barely hear it (still don't know if it is a normal level and I am just listening for it now). I'm officially scared it'll break if I drive it now. Hopefully I can get it fixed soon.
Thanks for the response though.
Mike
