Yank 4K stall
The lockup feature mechanically links the two halves of the converter (otherwise it's a fluid coupling) for better fuel economy (it reduces energy losses). Normally the PCM engages lockup when cruising at highway speed. It probably keeps the heat down, too.
My car has a manual lockup switch which, when engaged after the 2-3 shift, increases my trap speed by several mph--though it's apparently hard on the transmission.
