Default lockup temp???

Does the tranny have to reach a certain temp to command lockup??? I have been having issues when I am cruising down the interstate @ 65mph and the converter will just unlock. If I mash the throttle a few times to get things heated up it will lockup again. It only does it after cruising for 15 min or so. When it does lockup it is solid and doesn't slip or chatter. I logged for qbout 20 min tonight and tranny temps never got over 140 degrees. I am close to St. Louis ambient temps around 30 degrees. I have a 26k cooler. I haven't logged enough to check commands, but will do so tomarrow.

Yes it does. It helps the engine warm up faster, as well as the transmission if it doesn't lock up for a few minutes. It will definetely take longer in cold weather.

The The PCM will generally disallow lockup when the temp drops below around 140 degrees

^^I don't think that's necessarily true. I'll double check one of my stock tunes tonight to be sure, but if I remember correctly tcc lockup enable temperature is fairly low, around 70*F. If I drive my car at all when it's real cold out (rare) the tcc locks up well before my trans temp gauge starts registering (100*F).

To the original poster: I'm no expert but it doesn't sound like your lockup issue is temp related....if your trans is getting up to 140*, I wouldn't think your cooler is capable of cutting that temp in half. Did you bypass the stock cooler? Do you have a cam?....Have you messed with the misfire thresholds? Those will do some strange things with lockup.

I need to log a drive down the interstate to see what all is going on. Could be tuning related, I changed a couple of things that could have contributed to this situation.

TCC lockup is based on Engine coolant temp, not trans temp..

Yeah, forgot to mention that.

Going back to what I said, keeping it unlocked warms up the motor faster.

My 4L60E locks up perfectly in 3rd gear but when I shift to OD the RPMs do not change, EFILive registers 4th commanded, but the TC slips at 900-1000rpm and I get a Code 1870. I have a Transgo HD2 shift kit that converts the TCC system to a on/off (no PWM) and trans temp in 3rd lockup is ~125-130F (18000gvwr trans cooler and Amsoil ATF). Seems like Im getting the code because my trans isnt going into 4th gear at all, but whats weird is that I get complete lockup in 3rd, so I dont think TFT is a problem..

I really need help on this, its been driving me crazy having to drive at 75mph in 3rd gear at ~3800rpm, not good for gas mileage (especially since I have a truck, not a car). Thanks guys

At part (steady) throttle can watch my temp gauge, and when it hits the first mark locks (about 140 ECT).

I think I got it ironed out. Made some subtle changes and all is well. 70* tranny temp and 140* engine temp to command lockup.
