Stay light on the throttle and let the car catch up to the RPM's. It takes patience and you may be going a bit slower than the other traffic at first, until you hit cruise speed. If you do the accelerating with your foot your mileage will suffer.

 

seriously though, if you want any kind of traction in first gear you need to get some good tires.
