Stopped by David's today. He is located in Holden, La. It is the 225 area code. He does lots of custom stuff. Saw a 1969 fastback mustang with a 2000 cobra engine supercharged. Lots of other neat stuff. I looked at the 8.8" install it is a clean install. Will explain what he is doing.

He takes a used Housing. Cleans and Preps it.
He uses a new carrier = 28spline Track Lock
Uses new set of gears your choice.
He cuts the tubes off your rear-end and attaches them to the 8.8" housing.
He uses your stock axles.
Re-attaches your control arm brackets and stuff.
Does some custom work there and with the connection to the driveshaft.

Fits perfect looks almost factory except where the tubes attach to the 8.8". But even that is a good professional welding job. This unit had the tubes painted and stuff. I did not ask if that came with it. He said that if I wanted to do this. I could leave a deposit. He would get the housing and stuff ready. Then i would bring my car over one night and the next night I could drive it off.

Total cost for everything install =$1500
You may provide
Housing=-200
Gears=-200

Subtract those from the total if you provide. Well all I can say is after talking to him he is quite knowledgeable. And I found a place to do me a custom exhaust job for less than a cat-back. Also if you stop by ask to see the car under the cover in the back. Won't say what that is but it is a beauty. Leave that as a supprise.

Well 1500 and only out of a car for a day. As soon as Allan gets my car done I will be in line. I have a feeling talking to him not many people have been by yet. When this hits big and I expect it to i think the wait may be longer. But he acts like it won't be a problem. Also saw a Jag he is putting a DOHC motor in.

Later,
JoMo

Stock 10 bolt axles are definately a weak point in the drivetrain, people snap them all the time. If you have a strong carrier/gears and pair them with 10 bolt axles, the axles will snap.

Does anyone sell upgraded spline axles for 10 bolts?

The Moser upgrade axles for this is about 225. And just so you know it is not hard to find a 8.8" housing in a junkyard for about $50. So you save about $150 there. Spend an extra $75 and you got the axles.

The axles do break

I know of a TT SS that broke the axles and not the ring gear on a 6k launch!

Eliminate the wheel hop and most of your axle breaking problems are done, but its still probably a good idea to replace them anyway.

damn, I'm glad I read this. I also know where I can get, either for free or dirt cheap, a 8.8 rear. I was gonna get a custom 9" put in but since this sounds cheaper I'll go with this setup. I'll just contact this guy in OK that does the custom 9" for the f-bods and tell him what's up. thanks Jsears8!!!!

So what exactly did this guy use in the centre section to accept the 33 spline axles?

He's not using a spool is he?

It's not as easy as just chopping off the tubes and rewelding them. You have to align the tubes or the axles will be in there crooked. This will cause excessive wear in the bearings and put the shafts in jeopardy of binding and breaking. It can be done.....just take your time.

As far as welding the TA onto the centersection....you have to be a damn good welder to get mild steel to hold onto cast. You have to have your machine set really hot, the cast needs to be hot, and then use a quality rod such as 7018. No mig gun will get it.

Not an easy task....

This is very intresting, but still there hasnt been an answer to weather or not abs and tcs/asr working with these rear ends as well as the torque arm hook up. Jsears or someone can you answer this?

If I can get this:
direct bolt in
gears
housing
stronger axle (my friend snapped his so it DOES happen)
ABS
TCS
for about $1000-$1300 shipped - I would do it.
Any higher in price and I may as well get a 12 bolt.

This would be a sweet operation for someone willing to produce and ship these!

yea but i dont wanna call the guy to ask him questions that i am sure someone on here knows the answer too.

So Jsears8 or anyone? will the abs and tcs/asr work on these rear ends? ALso how is the torque arm mounting up? I am thinking the abs and tcs/asr will work since you are going to be useing the same brakes and hook ups, but i duno how to do the torque arm.

Also is the only really "tricky" part of this just making sure the 10 bolt axel tubes are lined up going into the 8.8 center section?

Can a 3 channel ABS (non TCS) work with this rear. I am curious b/c I can get one with a Trac-Loc?(I think that is what he said) and a 3.73 gear for pretty cheap.

now it was always my understanding that the 9'' is stronger than the 12-bolt (assuming the axels on the 12 arent giant-sized) i have ALWAYS heard the 9'' can handle more power than the 12-bolt.

there are several off-the-shelf torque arms for the 8.8 (griggs, maximum motorsports, etc...), and "mustang performance handbook" (mathis) has fabrication drawings for a couple different setups, for the DIY guys - just change the front pickup point for an f-body.

some mustangs had a 3-channel ABS pump, but there are sensors on all 4 wheels whether 3-channel or 4-channel. there are other ford vehicles with the ABS sensor inside the 8.8 center section. they have a ring pressed on around the carrier - so yeah, it can be done no matter what setup you have. if your sensors are at the wheels then it doesn't matter anyway, since you'd keep that part and just change the center section.

there are all kinds of posi's made for the 8.8 - pretty much any type... i've been looking!
