Default 8.8 Ford Rear installed PICS

A friend of mine had a local guy make a 8.8 Ford to fit in his '93 Z28. He stopped by today so I snapped some pics. He did an amazing job, it almost looks factory. The price is around $1500 in and out ( including labor, gears, Moser 33spline axels ) and you now have a rear just a strong as the 12bolt, lighter, and much cheaper. He is going to sell them soon so I will keep you posted...

I couldn't really tell b/c the car was on the ground, but I will find out. He said he fabricated the T/A mount and just welded the LCA and spring perch mounts off the stock rear to the 8.8

Is it really as strong as a 12 bolt? Can a locker be put in instead of a posi?

what year/model 8.8 did he use?

How is the width compared to stock, spacers?

And how is the wheel spacing?

Did he go to GM axles, or ford wheels?

Thx.

Ryan.

It is the same lenghts as stock, no spacers, stock wheels. I do not know how he did it but will get as much info as I can. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

The 8.8 isn't nearly as strong as a 12-bolt, but this looks like a great option for the more casual racer. The problems Mustang guys have running short gears, DR's, or ET streets on this rearend are miniscule compared to our experiences with 10-bolts.

At $1500 installed (compared to $2000+ w/o install for a 12-bolt) this guy is going to have customers lined up out the door if he offers this as a package. I may be one of them.

I think this rear end is using the factory 10 bolt axle tubes, axles, and brake assembly. The chunk of the 8.8 has its tubes cut off at some point, and then the factory tubes are welded to the chunk with some sort of guide tube acting as support. The 10 bolt axles should fit in the mustang posi.
But, what about the ABS and necessary reluctor ring?

The 8.8 is more effiecnt than either a 12 bolt or 9 inch, and lighter too! This will be a great alternative for A4 people. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Does anyone have a idea of how much torque this baby can handle? What about ABS ans ASR? Also, seeings how I have an A4 and dont plan on spinning a million ft lbs of torque, just a reliable rearend for 12.1 sec passes, you may want to find out on $$$$ without install for us not so local local guys. If he can weld it all up from other cores or something then I pay shipping type of deal- any idea for that????

i know the 99+ GT rear ends all have abs sensors at the wheels (4 channel) and are wider than the other fox, and early SN95 cars. (94-98)

Thx for any aditional info you can give for this swap.

Many, many guys are running consistent low 10's on an 8.8 rear-end with manual trannies, shocking the tires at 5-6k. Get a TA cover, some bigger axles, and IMO you'd be set. Plus you'd get more power to the ground.

just a FYI:

the bearings are the same size that go into a 12 bolt and 8.8" and the gears are just as big too

There are lots of guys in the 9s even with an 8.8"

Looks pretty slick, seems like he just welded the factory 10 bolt tubes to a 8.8 center section probably easier than welding all the perches and mounts to the 8.8 tubes and trying to get the brakes to work...

I picked a Mustang mag up today at work, and lo and behold there are lots of people running 8-10's with virtually stock 8.8s (moser axles and spools).

A couple were supercharged/turbocharged cars with 780ish hp. Why couldn't our 10-bolts be like that? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

AN 8.8 WILL HOLD anything an ls1 or ford motor can dish out.theve got guys running low 8s with these things, yes 8s.and hoffpauir is correct,he cut the tubes and welded them on an 8.8 center section.all abs componets are still in working order.a good 31 spline carrier and good axles and it will take alot of power to break these things.

Is this the end of the moser monopoly?

The Lincoln Mark IIV's used the 8.8, they look wider than the mustang and might be the right width for the f-body.

i want one <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

so if the gears are as large as a 12 bolts, where is the extra loss in the 12 bolt vs the 8.8?

what gear sizes are available too <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
