Would like to rebuild the transmission for race use.

Thinking of B&M master overhaul kit and transgo shift kit(manual). Do I have a better choice?

What other internal parts that I should replace to make a stout TH350?

I would get a hardened race for the intermediate sprag. You could also upgrade the low sprag but since your going full manual I dont know thats its nessesary since you will have the low clutch on anytime your in first gear which will support it very well. The intermediate sprag race is the only real weak link in the setup your building they are known to shatter on the 1-2 shift.

Trying to decide on overhaul kit/shift kit between:

BMM-21042 Automatic Transmission Rebuild Kit, Master Racing, GM, TH350, Kit
TRG-350-S Shift Kit, Stick Type, GM, TH350

or

BMM-30229 "B&M Transkits Automatic Transmission Rebuild Kit, TransKit, GM, TH350 Kit", includes auto/manual shift kit

or

HUP-HP3288K "Hughes Performance Transmission Rebuild Kits
Automatic Transmission Rebuild Kit, Premium Race with Kolene, GM, TH350, Kit"
TRG-350-S Shift Kit, Stick Type, GM, TH350

Another choice for shift kit is:
BMM-30228 "B&M Transpak Kits
Shift Kit, Transpak, GM, TH350/ TH375B/ M38, Each"

Anyone have used any of these? Prices put aside.

I am putting a Transgo Shift kit in mine. With a hardened race, kevlar band, and a new pump.

You know the intersting thing about that band is the only time it actually has any affect is when your in second manually and giving no throttle, Its and intermediate overun band it makes the slowing affect on the manual down shift from 3-2 at 0 throttle.

What do u think of increasing the number of clutches and decreasing the number of steel plates? Is it possible?

Would that increase the life and strength of the clutches?

I am not a transmission guy but trying to understand things.

Every clutch plate needs to be accompanied by a steel plate. With the way you are talking about doing it you will be decreasing the holding power of the clutch pack.

Vince,

I've this transmission guy claiming to build a bullet proof TH350 with this method and just a B&M transpak. Should I trust the work? I think some valve body modification, too.

If only 1st & 2nd are used, is it possible to decrease the clutches of 3rd gear and increase 1st&2nd clutched and how is that going to affect 1st&2nd. Why would the holding power decrease?

Each clutch pack is in a different location. You would not want to remove clutches from the high reverse drum (3rd gear). There would not be a benefit because by doing this it will not allow you to install more in the intermediate or forward clutch pack. I think that you might be confused on the info that your builder is telling you. I personally do not use B&M shift kits so I not sure about your builders knowledge.
