Sounds like a missing check ball or a spring is missing.

I would check that the valve behind the solenoid was properly installed. Also if you shimmed the servo make sure it wasnt to much this will cause a second gear start also and will result in buring up the 3-4 cltch also. With the car not running and in neutral wheels raised make sure you can turn the driveshaft in both directions, On direction will have a little more drag but you should be able to do it by hand. If your car has the plastic 1-2 acum pistion I have seen this happen also when you place the springs on the top and the bottom of the servo I have seen the servo break , This will allow modulated line presure to leak into the 2nd gear circuit and cause it to be applied in first gear. That would be something else to consider .
Hope this helps some

I can tell you something is applying the band a crossleak. servo to tight etc, first isnt really even a gear from a clutch apply point of veiw its the forward clutch applied in the absence of any other clutch or band applied, Some one has reassembled something wrong.

the 1-2 shift valve and spring are easily installed backwards and will go together just fine but you can't make the ***** have 1st gear!!! You can change it without removing the valve body by removing the solenoid and checking/changing the valve and spring > The spring should be in 1st then the valve > !!!Have fun
