Default Driving in 3rd???

Is driving around town in 3rd gear okay. What are the advantages and disadvantages?

For me theres no real advanatage or disadvantage other than stated using more gas, Some people like the way the car feels better due to the overun clutch being on ,

If you haven't tuned yet for a high stall converter, driving in 3rd can get you into lockup at speeds where you would normally be slipping. This can lower your transmission temperature and save gas.

+1.. I have mine set to lockup at 30mph in 3rd/D about 1500 rpm (3.73 gears). It does help keep the trans cool and keep the car at a lower RPM when driving down roads that have a 40mph or less speed limit.

That does indeed work to help keep tranny temps down in cars that have stock internals, basically minor mods and small changes to V/E and MAF Tables.

However, when locking up the converter in 3rd with a H/C combo the driveability can change significantly. I have seen everything from cam surge, TCC chatter, intermittant TCC, No TCC, improper shif ttiming and the list goes on!

I usually drive in third in the city and od on the highway. I dont really care about gas mileage as the car doesnt get much anyway but I didnt get it for that third gear defiently saves my trans temp as lockup is set to about 30mph.

Yes we have had to tune around low RPM symptoms in 3rd gear in the past, remember though... it is heavily dependant on the combination!

Yep, it's fine; car feels more responsive due to lower gear compared to 4th;

In 4th, engine may lug due to almost idle rpms, so 3rd is good.

Thats exactly what i do... My car just continues to accelerate...& pull until shifting to OD on the freeway... then it cruises like an M6 in 6th gear...

Another 3rd gear driver here... I have to leave it in 3rd in traffic unless I'm on the freeway because even though my slip codes have been adjusted, I still get MILs for my shift solenoids. Then, I only have 2nd and 3rd gear until I reset the trouble codes. Perhaps not all the correct adjustments have been made, but leaving it in 3rd in traffic isn't a big deal anyways.

You'll be just fine.
