Default 4L60E vs 700R-4....

Ok, this is my delima. I have a 1988 IROC-Z. I'm would like to drop in an LS1 eventually. Good idea right? Well I wanna know do I have to also bolt up a 4L60E or will a 700R-4 bolt to a LS1, or can a 700R-4 even handle the power of the LS1. If I remember correctly the 4L60E is a different lenght then the 700R-4 and that means that I would have to get a different drive shaft as well and I don't want to do that seeing as how my IROC-Z came stock with an alluminum drive shaft and I would like to keep it on the car. Now if memory serves the 98-02 4L60E is a different length but the 93-97 model 4L60E is the same length as the 700R-4, is that correct? If that is right can I use one of those with the LS1? Except for the engine, I'm trying to keep the car as original as possibal; Borg warner 9 bolt and all. I'm doing all kinds of reading and research to get all my ducks in a pond so to speak before I go spending any more money. If anyone would like to see pics of the IROC-Z so far you can check out my cardomain site. Any suggestions and or commments would be greatly appreciated. The front tubular K-member is all ready and bolted to the car for the LS1. Like I said a many of times, this is gonna be a long time project and I thank all for their help. I don't want to spend any money on something that is gonna turn around and bite me in the a$$. Thanks again.

4l60e is an electronic 700, but if you dont use an ls1 4l60e you would need adapters to make it work.

By adapters, do you mean just new bell housing?

Ok now I'm confused...a friend of mine just told me that the 700R-4, 4L60(93-97), and the 4L60E(98-02) are all the same length. Is he correct?

Yes they are the same length and share the same mount locations.

What Sroach is trying to say is that the bellhousing where the transmission mounts to the engine has different mounting points between the 60 and 700. But the 700 will bolt up to a GEN III block, but you wont be using 2 mounting holes, and that is no biggy.

As for the input shaft i think its splined differently then the 60E transmissions for the 700, so you'll need a converter made for a 700 but fits the LS1 flywheel.

ok for starters the 82-92/3 700's ARE 4l60's. The 4l60E's are 93/94-present, GM stopped using the one piece case all together in 97, the 2 piece case was introduced in 96.

The 700's/4l60's are the same length as the one piece case 93-97 4l60e's. As for the two piece case's, im not sure, but i think they are the same lenght or close enough.

The '98/'02 4l60e bell housing is longer to make room for the bigger converter so the late 4l60e's overall length is longer . The engine bolt pattern is the same but the ls has an added bolt at the top center location . They will bolt up either way though !! The ls converter has a different pilot setup and will not fit an earlier crank and flexplate . Likewise the non ls converter pilot is different but a torque converter builder can make a converter that will fit whatever you use as long as you have all the correct info for them !!

If that doesn't confuse you enough call us tomorrow at the shop and we can help answer any ??????? you may have !! John

With the way things are sounding since I will have to order a LS1 wiring harness I might as well get a 4L60E anyway since its the same length as the 700 or else I will have empty wires hanging. That will probably be cheaper in the long run then trying to convert the 700 to fit the LS1 as long as I know the drive shaft will reach ok. Plus being electric I can adjust the shift points later. Sound good?

you can get one off of any 98 or newer ls1 (97 vette) or 99+ newer body style trucks with a v8 (4.8, 5.3, or 6.0).

Thanks. I'm sorry to all those who have read this but I just realized that when I said that you could look at my IROC in my cardomain link it wasn't set up right well it is now corrected if anyone is interested. Thanks for all your help. I'm probably gonna look for a wrecked LS1 car locally for the engine and transmission. After that I would part it out. I would like to get a 00-02 like my T/A(no EGR). I no alot of you would disagree but I am gonna keep cats on the car for some back pressure(more torque). Any suggestions are always welcome. I'll posts any pics and updates on the project on both sites. Thanks again.
