Default manual valve body in auto trans

i have heard of people having manual valve bodies in their automatic trans.
is this true and if so how do they work? how much r they? and will they work in a 4l60e trans?

with a manual valve body you would have to shift the trans mission all the time just like a manual

Yes there are kits in the marketplace that allow us to modifiy a 4L60E to make it a Manually Shifted Automatic.... that means there is no automatic shifting.

We have those in some of our highest horsepower applications. The only problem I see is the unit must be removd ant thoroughly disassembled and modifications be made that will enable it to take the punishment. Also, depending on the rear axle ratio it can be a bit of a leaning curve getting it our of 1st into 2nd...someitmes that happens rather fast.

Call me... we can get you the advice you need.

I dont have one yet, but i drove my buddies Iroc that has one. biggest prob/headache about it is when you slow down to stop at a light, you need to go back to first gear. you'll forget for a short while, and take off in 3 or 4 alot. but you'll get the hang of it just like when you learned to drive a stick. except NO clutch pedal to ride in bumper to bumper traffic. plus, you can start out in 2nd to save on gas money and less gear changes. was goin to do it to my car (700r4) if I was goin to keep it. but thats not a good selling point for a car like this.

Right... driving a full manual automatic transmission on the street requires a bit of a learning curve... not smart to leave in 2nd.

is there a problem with starting in 2 gear? 94ta's had that as an option, but maybe thee's something different about the manual valvebody though? enlighten me please.

If it is an automatic transmission it will leave in 1st gear and then shift to 2nd automatically.

If it is a manually shifted automatic... meaning it has been programmed for no automatic upshifts or downshifts... it will leave in 2nd gear.

Hope that helps.

no, Im wondering why you think its a bad idea to start out in second gear on a manual valve body equiped a4? maybe you just misunderstood what I was saying earlier. not talking about manually shifting a 60E trans thats still auto.

Well the biggest thing is it is lugging the engine, it actually takes more throttle input to move the car which = more RPM's. Just like taking off in anything other than 1st in a stick car.

Second, when you do that you are leaving in a higher converter stall state. Which tends to build unnecessary heat.

It is not necessarily detrimental to the transmission mechanically.

aha. makes sense. only thing Id add to that statement is, needs higher throttle activation to achieve the same acceleration speed. but if your willing to take off really slow, and still barely apply throttle, stall speed and heat would be only draw back? maybe? ah, one day I'll see for myself.

I was wondering about this...

What does this do to the life of the transmission?

What does what do to the life of the unit... the poor shift habits or the manual valve body mods?

The poor shifting habits, not really sure... but I am going to presume it cannot be healthy for the powertrain longterm... never met someone who did not shift the manual setups as they were designed.

As far as the manual valve body mods... in my experience it has improved the lifespan considerably in our highest horsepower vehicles that are using big power adders.

I take off in 2nd gear in my T-Bird 4.6 about half the time. I never do it when heading uphill though! Just for easy starts, usually when not coming to a complete stop.

not to sound like a dick, and I know it will anyways, but. so basically you dont have any reason for feeling like that about starting out in 2nd gear and no logic behind calling it "poor shift habits"? Im just not seeing how it could be any different from the CAGS 1-4 gear change on the M6's. that sure does lug down the engine when you do that. again, Im not talking about accelerating hard starting it in 2nd gear. no point in that. but for very casual driving why not?

I wouldnt be afraid to do it in that circumstance. cant see how it oculd possibly hurt anything. it still has full line pressure. yes it will put more load on the eng. forcing it to work a little harder to move the car from a dead stop, but not like my car would be hurting for torque compared to any stock car. and it would be NO different (again, from what I can tell and Im no trans expert) then installing like a 2:42 rear axle ratio in a car instead of 3:42's. or, how bout, a powerglide trans with high 1st gear ratios.

Not at all sure what you are after here Chris... in my opinion the vehicle should be driven as it was designed.

You apparently have a different opinion.... that's perfectly alright.

About how much does it cost do to full manual in a 4l60e? I would assume it needs to be taken to a thoroughly exp. tranny builder too.

yeah i was wondering how much it would cost, and what needs to be changed in the tranny besides the manual valve body?

That is a good question... Consider this, when the change has been made typically the unit gets driven harder... it's just more fun to drive! So it is wise to have the unit freshened up while the conversion to Manual shifting is being done.

The kit we use is a Trans-Go HD-3. It is very similar to the HD-2 kit. It will delete the PCS (which we do on all of our Level2 units) and includes all of the updated clutch pack return springs, valve body upgrades and other upgrades associated with the HD-2 kit. We charge an additional $150.00 for this upgrade when we are building the unit.

So... it is a bit of a convoluted answer but I would not recommend this stand alone modification as it can contribute to the early demise of your unit in short order without the additional upgrades... there is a reason you can only get it with the HD-3 complete kit.

Now, there are companies that sell just the valve body... I don't recommend that installation without the aforementioned upgrades. It is just not smart to spend the money for that and then have to build the unit afterwards.

If somebody came to me and said... "Eh, I don't care if my tranny fails afterwards, I want a Manual Valve body." I would charge them $400.00 for the installation of the components that make it a Manual shift unit. And there would be no warranty from me on the job, other than it would operate the way it was designed to the day it left!

Hope that helps guys.
