Trans slipping in overdrive . . . . .
Car has 106k miles with orginal tranny(stock converter, no cooler). Trans slips going highway speeds, between 65-80mph. If you put the gas down a little to pass or speed up, it shoots the rpms way up(sometimes past 3000). The weird thing is it shifts fine, shifts great going into overdrive.
So what's wrong with it? Am I due for a total rebuild?
I don't think that's it. Just from the way its acting, it doesn't feel like the torque converter locking and unlocking. The RPMs will shoot up and I'll be holding a steady speed or loosing mph.
Checked the fluid, it looks okay, and no noticble odor. It has been serviced every 30,000 miles(filter and fluid change, not flushed). I did notice if I stuck my nose right up to the dipstick, there was a faint waft of hot tar/fresh asphalt.
Didn't smell anything like the tranny on my Buick when it croaked. That was a smell I'll never forget, and it stunk up the whole car as well. Blew that one up racing my buddy's Pathfinder, probably overheated the sucker.

Aron, when you say the car shoots up to 3,000 rpms when cruising...what is the normal RPM before it shoots up? Does it shoot up 300 rpms, 500 rpms, 1000 rpms?
