How well does your 4L80E fit and how strong is this tranny?

It will fit a truck I'm not sure about a F-body.On a truck you have to change the driveshaft and use a stand alone computer to control the shift functions.TCI makes the computer you might contact them.

it fits an F-body...you just need a little BFH reasoning tool. DS is different, and you can get a cheap manual valvebody vs. the $700 T-Com.

oh yeah...it will hold 1000hp if built well. John Meaney has one in his 1200hp vette. check nu-tek's customer page; they have a supercharged camaro with an 80.

ryanj, so putting in a manual valvebody will take care of the computer system needs. in that case you would just have to shift it when you were at the "SHIFT POINT" right, and of course change to the different size converter and drive shaft. doesn't sound to bad really, would be like having an old school 4 speed car. i might just have to look into this when my stock 4l60junk dies AGAIN

yeah. do a google search for the manual VB, someone out there makes one...in fact TCI says they will be making one real soon (maybe even now). with the manual vb, it shifts when you shift...no question. Plus you get overdrive and lockup. TCOM is the best way...infinately controllable in every way (looks list f.a.s.t., just for your tranny), and you can get one used for maybe $500?

Theoretically, your PCM can support the 4L80E...if your car's year of production is 99+. You can select that option in LS1edit. You just have to modify the wiring harness. I don't know of anyone actually using this method, but it's worth a try.

Your other option is to use a piggy-backed PCM. Hughes sells a full conversion package for the F-Body...including the DS. I think it runs ~$6k...including the tranny core and full race build.

Your only running 12s, and a 4L60E will live for a long time with anything below 800 rwhp. I made 100 runs last year with my 60E and 650 rwhp with no problems. I changed to a T400 this year because I'm now making around 1000 rwhp. Don't bother with an 80E.

A 4L80E can hold just as much as an equivalently built TH400. It's just a matter of whether you want vacuum or electronic control.

yeah i talked to my tranny guy and he said both trannies use the same commands from the pcm and everything is identical the wires are in different plugs, so theoretically if you changed the wiring on the plugs for the tranny it should not know the difference. you will have to contend with the extra 80 lbs or so though.

If you make enough power to actually NEED a 4L80E/TH400, 80lbs aint gonna be a big deal

Hell, I wouldnt mind 80lbs if the install was easy (verter, wiring, pcm, ds, etc.) I used to spray a stock 4L80E with 150hp NX DAILY in a 6000lb 3/4-ton truck. if you can get one cheap, and you make less than 500rwtq...it will certainly last longer than a 4L60, even stock.
