Default Yank vs TCS

What are the PROs and CONs of each converter at 4000 stall speeds?

I am biased because I have always run Yank converters.I have run the 3500,4000 and now the 4400[4200 really].

I think my Yank 4000 was an excellent street/strip verter.My SY3500 did 1.7/60'-SY4000/1.6s and the 4400Yank does high 1.4s.

I had 0 issues with all my Yanks, they performed better than my expectations.I have no first hand info on the TCS units.

I have a Yank 4200 convertor and overall I am pleased. It is a little loose for street driving but I have 4:10 (3:73's would be fine) gears and the car revs up fast anyway and matches the convertor nicely. Also, in town, you learn to drive in 3 gear for easier driving. It really shines at the track. With heads and cam, it will shine even more. For now, my car is a total bolt-on. If I could redo it, I would have gotten the Yank 4400. Cheers.

Both are very good and are my top 2 brands. The Yank YTP's produce nice long shift extensions which is very good from a roll but loose in driving.

The TCS's clutch materials are more stock computer friendly. Some YTPs have required minor changes to the lock-up points to avoid chatter.

TCS=better price+better customer service...and I haven't heard anything bad about them at all and you can have what ever stall and str you want.

I had a Yank 3200 and just changed it out for a TCS 3800.

I had bought my Yank used and sent it back to Mike to have it rebuilt and restalled. My experience with Mike was all positive. He provided exactly what he said he would in the time frames he promised.

I went with TCS for my upgrade because I was looking for something that would perform similiar to the SS3800, but didn't want the expense of a SS3800 ... Derek custom built me a TC for about $200 less than what a Yank would have cost, plus a 3 year warranty and unlimited restalls - 3800 stall, 2.85 STR and 6000 rpm shift extension ... I picked up 2.5 tenths and 2 mph in a 1900 D/A over my best with the 3200 in a 300 D/A. With better D/A, it probably has a couple more tenths and mph in it. Top it off with some pretty good street manners, it's little looser than the Y3200, but I really only noticed it when I was looking for it ...

Derek, for me anyway, was a little easier to talk with than Mike ... more of a give and take.

That's a hell of deal. And to think I questioned you gains with that TC awhile ago. When you add in all of that, it changed my opinion real fast.

I'm in the market for a SS3800 real bad, but don't want to wait 3 months. I would like a 3800 stall, 2.50 STR and 4900-5000 rpm shift extension. I also run the the Yank Y3200 and want a bigger TC. How efficient is that converter and did you lose any top end?

Do they have a website or phone number to contact?

Based on top end, it's pretty efficient .. Like I said, I picked up 2 mph in a D/A that was 1300 feet worse than my best with the 3200 ... Derek has a 97% efficient and a 98% efficient. I got the 98%. Don't ask me the difference, I just said OK. I'm personally coming to the belief that the shift extension has more to do with what we call efficiency ... just keeping it up in the power band after shifting - sorta like staying in the gas and power shifting with a manual. With the 3200 I had a shift lag, even with !TM, which is completely gone now ... talk to Derek, but you may want to consider a higher shift extension ... driving around town, other than the initial looseness from idle - and don't let that deter you, it's really not that noticable - it drives like and locks up just like the 3200 did.

The only thing I haven't done yet is take it out and really run it through it's paces in the twisties yet ... but that'll be coming in the next couple of weeks, along with some autoxing early August ..

As mentioned above, TCS is a sponsor as well as their dealer Rapid Motor Sports ... The entire process from order to delivery took 3 weeks and half of that time was on UPS ...

Running a SS3800E, I ordered it on a thursday and FedEx droppied it off the following monday so i am one of the lucky ones that didn't have to wait.
This is my second Yank and if they keep pumping out this style of converter then i am a life long customer.

The only people that wait months for a Yank converter are those who order it through a group purchase. Order it straight from Yank and get it in a few days PLUS take advantage of the moving sale that's going on right now.

Just call Derek at TCS, talk to him for 5 minutes and you'll know why I chose TCS.

Yeah that's because you haven't talked to Derek, and I have heard getting ahold of Mike is not that easy

I talked to Mike last week (who did return my call promptly)
and he said for the SS3800 it's free shipping only, no reduced price. The turnaround time direct is 1 week he said.

God, I am major fence sitting here.

Both converters are awesome

Mike will ship a YANK REAL FAST.
I've gotten many from him in 3 days or less.

I run a VIG now but I might go to a SS3800 real soon.

I've talked to both, in person. Both Mike & Derek are enthusiastic about building a quality, high performing, converter.

I tip my hat to both. Over the years, Yank has done some really interesting R&D work and has some great designs out there. The YTP series broke the myth that a high stall, high STR converter was inefficent. The SY series is a stoplight racer's dream.

TCS came into the LS1 market strong from the start with a solidly built 4000 stall converter capable of hanging with the best and nicely priced too.
