I just got one locally from someone who didn't know what it was. $150. came out of a '01 GMC 1 ton w/ 5.7. I looked on the stickies, and somewhere in there is a list of all the vehicles and years that they came in. From what I understand, the '99 and up are more desireable because they are soposed to be better built, and have the 12o'clock bolt hole on the bellhousing. If i can find the list, i will post the link.

---can't find the link, but I at least saved this section of it--- also, remember, 4l80e has 17 bolts on the pan.

Easyest, fastest way to see a good year (other than looking at the tag on it!)

Cooler lines front and back, not just two up front.
12 o'clock bellhousing bolt.
Best for an LS engine.

OR At least get one with front and rear cooler lines.

In either case try to get the lower flexplate cover so you can use all the bolts to the engine.

And you cant use the 4x4 models....i thought that was obvious enough, the tail housing is different along with some other things, you need to find a 4x2 setup which makes everything that tad bit harder to find

I got my 4l80e from a u pull it yard for 66 bucks I then got it rebuilt it I heard you can make them just about as strong as a newer unit and I dont care about the 12 o clock bolt hole also on the older model the trans cooler lines are up front pretty close to where the 4l60e is and my cooler lines pretty much lined right up. Btw I got it out of a 94 GMC 2500 Van I ended up basically looking underneath most of the pickups and vans at the u pull it yard until I found one with a 4l80e. There was a ton of vans/pickups so I figured I might as well take a quick look underneath and got lucky and found one. It was pretty easy to remove on a van because they have the removable dog box and the top bolts were easy. The trans was really heavy and took a few ppl to get it out.

Good catch. I forgot to mention that. I read somewhere on the net of someone using one out of a 4x4. Had to buy another tail housing and other parts etc. Much easier to get it from a 4x2 like fenix999 said.

How much was the rebuild? You have it in the car now? If so, hows it holding up.

I mentioned the line location because there is way more to it than where they come out of the case. Trust me you don't want to screw up and get a '91 model year.

I had performabuilt a sponser on here rebuild it. They did it for like 1700 or so if I remember right im still breaking in the tranny and tuning some tweaking but it seems to shift good. Ill be putting it to the test with some spray at the track hopefully the rear holds so I get to test it. So hopefully im out testing it in Feb.

Nice, I think when my FLT stage V goes, I am going the 80E route. I have read that these are alot stouter trans and can hold some decent power of something like ~800 before you start getting into any risk of damage.

Do you need another computer for it correct?

Yep, so far so good.. ~14 bottle of spray and ~25 track runs.

Ill def. be given yall a call when it is time. I am wanting to go turbo at some point down the road, and I think a 80E is the only way to go.

Yea if you have a 1999 and up I believe you can just use hp tuners and have a 4l80e file sent to you. You need someone on the hp tuners board that can do a segement swap file where you post your current file and have someone make it a 4l80e. Performabuilt is only 1hr away and ive seen they have some fast 4l60e cars so the 4l80e should be even better and there customer service seems excellent as ive been asking Frank a few questions about certain things.

I heard pretty much all years are a good fit alot of people like the newer ones because of the top bolt but that doesnt matter to me. I got a 94 and it was nice that the cooling lines were in the front of the case this made it easy.
