Default Older 4L80E

Hey everybody, I'm getting ready to do a 5.3 swap into a 73-87 Chevy truck, and I have a few transmission questions.

First of all I have an older 80e that came out of a '95, I think, 1-ton 4x4 with a vortec 350. Could this be made to work with the 5.3? If so, what would it take?

Secondly the transmission has been sitting for about 5 or 6 years, it supposedly only had about 100 miles on it when my friend got it. Would a rebuild be necessary? And what about torque converters, I've heard you need to run a different one in the cars but what about in a pickup?

I'll try to get a few pictures of the transmission up this weekend, if there is any specific part I need a picture from let me know.

Thanks in advance for all of the help,
Carson

The 5.3 will need either need a crank spacer or a converter built with a Ls1 front cover. I would definitely get the trans freshened up before installing it with 100k on it. Good luck with your project sounds like fun. Vince

Not 100k, just 100 miles. My friend bought it and the motor as a pullout from a junkyard. Where would I find a crank spacer and about how much do they run? Do you carry them? What about the tailshaft(I think thats the right term) would there be a difference in the 2wd and 4wd? Are the bellhousing bolt patterns the same?

Im no expert but I think that may be a 2wd trans? I know alot of them chevy pickups from the earlier-mid 90's were 2wd. The only thing im not sure about is that box on the site I forget the name but the shifter linkage may need to be changed? Other then that if it is a 2wd trans just find the proper slip yoke like maybe post a pic of the the trans with the tail housing off and people here can help. I got one out of a 94 van and it was pretty much good to go just had the follow the directions in the writeup.

It looks like a bolt on yoke from a 2WD. Unbolt the yoke and have a driveshaft made with just the slip yoke. If the tranny has been sitting for 5-6 years the seals could be suspect from not being lubed all that time. Have the trans looked at. Talk to your favorite converter company. They may build the converter to fit the 5.3 without a spacer. TCI has spacers to cure this problem. I got one in my SFI flywheel box with the flywheel. Cars and trucks usually use the same converters unless there is a stall difference. The nice thing about this trans is you have the bolt on lines. Some people don't like the snap on style lines.

Cool, thanks for all the information.

Couple more questions for now--

The bellhousing pattern is the same on GenI and GenIII motors?

What are some favorite converter companies?
