Racing from a roll?
i thought it wouldnt go into 4th or OD unless u hit a certain speed like over 125ish or so?
i know the whole "IS IT BETTER IN OD or D" threads have been posted before. but im still wondering which would be better to drive in as well as not wear out your tranny? honestly, i dont see how driving and racing in OD would be bad? like i said, i dont think it goes into OD or 4TH unless u go over a certain speed right? one thing i dont want to do is keep shifting from D to OD and vice versa. i think that would hurt the tranny from constantly shifting.

If you want to race from a roll, manually drop the car into D, then 2nd gear if your ~70 MPH or slower w/ 3.23s. Do not manually downshift while going WOT, manually downshift first.
As far as 3-4 shift, that will happen at WOT. With 3.23s and stock sized tires expect the 3-4 shift to come ~ 127 MPH. If you manually hold the car in 3rd expect to hit the rev limiter in 3rd at 133 MPH. Obviously their will be some varying from car to car, expect your speedo to be off a couple MPH either way. The automatic cars will hit 157 MPH or so in 4th gear.

that was a year and a half ago
and i'm driving a mustang while i'm waiting on my 3-4 clutches to be fixed
weither or not leaving the car in D (f-body OD) caused that or not, i dont know
EDIT: Just noticed the irony...

Some years back their was a guy named Perry Kincy (sp?) who I believe claimed to have hit ~ 170 MPH in a stockish M6 car.
i didnt realize the f-bodies were that low!
If its not good for the trans to shift from 3-4 at wot then how are we supposed to race m6 cars to 150-160mph. If thats true we would be limited to about 125mph.
what trans parts could be upgraded to handle a wot shift from 3rd to 4th?

thats what i keep hearing also? dont let it go into 4th at WOT!! i dont get that at all? im just gonna keep it in OD for everything like i was doing. im not crazy to go 150-160 anyways!!
lot of bad info in here...
<<< 3.73s...built a4...shifts to 4th nice and smooth out of 3rd at wot at 132mph....car with those gears will beat the speedometer....raced sticks before, car does fine once it gets to 4th
cooling, correct tuning, A GOOD BUILD, and on time change of fluid...you should never really have problems with you tranny doing this

Im not saying ive ever done 150-160mph during a highway race. But id like to know with confidence that i could. I have a built a4 and ive gone 3-4 on a h/c 150shot car. Ive done this a few times with no issues. Does anyone know what part in the trans would need to upgraded to shift at wot with out any issues.
A4 3.23 gear my car shifts from 3-4 @ WOT speedo reads 137ish, from a roll I usually drop it to the lowest gear I can get into, usually it's 2nd for a 40-60 punch, after I hit it I slid the shifter back up to OD and let the car shift itself.
i leave mine in od...unless i know its goana be a close race then i will slow down do a little wot run to make teh car downshift then i downshift it during that and let off...this keeps from over run clutch problems...then just roll up next to them and your in gear...at the exact same time i hit it i shift back to od an just stay in for the ride

im just keeping mines in OD as well man!! if i decide to play and roll race, ill still leave it in OD and just slow down and let the computer downshift itself and go from there!!! i dont want to constantly keep shifting from OD to D back to OD and vice versa.. i think doing that will definitely hurt the tranny.
why not just do 1 big poll!!! LOL!!
This is from EPP's site (from the trans shop they use).

'Shown here is the main item that breaks in the 4L60's, and it happens when people get on it in overdrive. In overdrive the inner part is spinning at a different speed than the outer part, but when full throttle is applied and the tranny drops down to 3rd gear, the parts lock up together. In vehicles with a lot of torque, this part just cannot handle full throttle blast in overdrive, unless speeds are above the point to where the tranny would drop a gear.
Rodney suggest that the tranny be manually dropped into 3rd before attempting full throttle blast.'

A trans cooler, and trans fluid change at least every 15K miles will help the transmission stay together for a longer time, but if you have the cash, get a nice stall and a built Trans from one of the sponsors.
okay, so lets say if im on the freeway doing 65-75 and decide to play, what would be the safest speed to slow down to and manually drop it from OD to D? i just dont want to be doing 65-75 and drop it and damn tranny blows.
there was also a thread a long while back where a guy said he had better line pressure in OD than D? and i guess with not so much line pressure in D it killed the 3-4 clutch or something like that. im surprised none of the tranny sponsors have dropped there .02 cents

That may be the case there, around here its mostly domestics and they still dont dig race....lol....I wouldnt trade my built and stalled auto for anything.
