Default Racing from a roll?

When Im about to race on highway, should I drop the transmission from od to d? will this hurt the tranny? Also with my 373's, what mph will i need to shift it to od just incase if im about to go to 140 or 150mph.Is it bad to shift from d to od at 45 or 50mph?

dont shift it yourself, you'll only hurt your trans. Just leave it in OD, and try to find your sweetspot (30is-45ish)

i do not suggest you do this but it has proved to be extrememly beneficial when it comes to racing, to me at least...but at the same time, extremely tarnishing on the trans...

when im racin from a roll, i drop it in 2. Obviously, rpms are up higher than the guy next to you if hes in an a4 too (odds are hes prlly not doing this)...and believe me i know this is really bad for the trans, i give myself **** for it often...this is at absolutely no more than 55mph...what i notice is this...when you go WOP, you immediately begin to pull on the guy becuase your going through top end of 2nd gear. in the mean time hes building up from 3rd...so you pull and then once you shift to OD he pulls a lil but then he shifts and your still racing through 3rd while hes in 4th...then eventually he pulls and so on...call me an ******* but it worked for me...

i dint mention that the car i went up against was my buddies ws6...only diff is he had pistons, 3.73 gears, and a low stall, which doesnt really matter too much from a roll...
...he was still pissed off to find i was consistently pulling on him by half car length every time

basically this is just me being an idiot...listen to the guy up there, he knows wat hes sayin

When i had a auto and about to roll race i would put it in the gear that i need before going WOT so that im already in gear - If you dont you lose that 1/2 sec while your car is kicking down. In other words if two autos are racing from lets say 45mph and one is in second gear and the other is in OD, the one in second gear when going WOT assuming they go WOT at the same time the one already in gear will get the jump usually about a 1/4 car to a 1/2 car. just my .02

I do not manually shift my automatic. That is rediculous. What i do is I hammer the pedal down on the second honk. That way by the third your in gear and pulling. It is the best of both worlds. Just make sure your at a low enough mph so that the car will down shift into the gear your want. If you too high in rpms it wont work.

try this and let me know what you think

This is from EPP's site (from the trans shop they use).

'Shown here is the main item that breaks in the 4L60's, and it happens when people get on it in overdrive. In overdrive the inner part is spinning at a different speed than the outer part, but when full throttle is applied and the tranny drops down to 3rd gear, the parts lock up together. In vehicles with a lot of torque, this part just cannot handle full throttle blast in overdrive, unless speeds are above the point to where the tranny would drop a gear.
Rodney suggest that the tranny be manually dropped into 3rd before attempting full throttle blast.'

i think post above yours just about solves it. i WOULDNT suggest a manual upshift on the 3-4 full throttle though. it may never shift.

full throttle 3rd to 4th shift, if it does shift, and you're making any power you're going to break something, usually the input shaft starts having trouble.

so for driving on the highways 65-75 put it in OD for gas saving purposes. but if i do decide to play, just slow down and put it in D and then go WOT? what mph should i be around to downshift it into D without putting alot of stress on the tranny?

The tranny will not shift from 3rd to 4th at WOT unless you've changed something in the PCM. Comes from GM that way

does the 4l60E use the same 3-4 upshift pin/valve that the 700/4l60 does? i had that mod done on my 93.you could take it to the top of 3rd, easy up on the throttle put it in OD and then get back in it and let it keep pulling.

where are you getting this from?
my auto always shifted from 3-4 at wot before it was tuned. you must be referring to the speed limiter that was on v6 fbodies and some v8 fbodies with crap for tires.

It depends on the year or possibly the options the car had? not sure there but some are set from the factory for a Wide open 3-4 others are not. my buddies 2000 SS had it allowed from the factory but my 2001 Z28 had it limited from the factory for a "lift to shift" 3-4. this is all verified by looking at the tunes that were in the cars.

I don't know if it matters, but I had a '94 Trans Am GT that would shift from 3rd to 4th at about 125 mph at WOT. I can't imagine the LS1 cars being much different in that regard. Just my .02 cents.
