Default No 2nd gear??

Went to houston today to pick up my Z28 i bought on ebay last week and was a bit suprised when i test drove it. Take off from a stop and the car does fine till its time to shift into 2nd. It doesnt. Feels like it skips 2nd and shifts to 3rd. Shifts to overdrive and the torque converter lock up just fine. Easing on the gas from a stop the engine revs to 3000 in 1st before it shifts and when it does the rpms drop considerably. Driving 55 down the road i can downshift manually to 3rd. Try putting the shifter into 2nd at 55 and its like the car is in neutral. I can also downshift into first manually while driving and the tranny will respond. 2nd is the only gear that when im driving and i downshift that i get nothing. Take off from a stop with the shifter in 2nd and the car just stays in 1st.

So of course im pissed as hell at this guy for not saying **** about this SMALL problem in his auction. The car is in excellent condition and priced to sell to say the least. I told him to knock a grand off the price and i would take it home. He agreed so now its my problem to deal with.

Just wanted some opinions/answers before i decide to pull the transmission...

Many will debate the band being bad but I find it in most all cases to be a band issue. Reason being that there are really 2 band adjustments in the servo assemblies. In your case I believe that second servo is probably looser than the 4th. Unfortunately the band is damaged and that is why it seems to not have second gear. I would suggest looking at some of the trans data to see if in fact the computer is commanding the 1-2 shift. I have seen in a couple cases when a superior servo was used, there is a clip that will break from time to time. The debris from this clip can stop the servo from stroking and also damage the servo bore. Good luck but unfortunately it sounds like you are in need a new transmission and or repairs. You could take a look at the 1-2 accumulator for a broken spring or a broken piston. Also there could be an issue with the second gear servo sealing rings. However if you have an issue in this circuit more than likely the band is already damaged if you have not caught it in time. Vince

Yea i was hoping that the pcm or a sensor was the problem but the whole shifting into 2nd and the engine spining likes its in nuetral makes me wonder. Ill check the 1-2 accumlator since i can do that with the pan off.

Im not doing or having a patch job done since i know these trannys are weak stock and it already has a good bit of miles on it. I should have told the guy to knock more than a 1000 off the price since this looks like its gonna run me between 1800 and 2000 for a good tranny and converter. Damn!

That sucks. Hopefully the trans guy can find a better solution than an entire rebuild. Im not getting any hopes for mine though. Im probably gonna go with PerformaBuilt's level 1 and be done with it. I dont really trust most of the local shops where im at. The only shop im considering has their crap overpriced. I want this tranny to keep up with my motor...
