Default A4 shifting prob...

My car has been shifting strangely for the past couple of months. It started with hesitation during the 3-4 shift, and a strange sound prior to each shift. Cannot describe the sound. Now, on occasions it shifts hard from 1-2. This is a 1998 Z28 A4. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

i have a '98 ws6 and i'm having the same issues w/my a4....hard shifts, hesitation, whatnot. especially in the cold weather, seals are going. i'm getting mine rebuilt as soon as i can. hopefully i can get it done b4 i take a trip overseas, lol. am lookin into a good shop to have it done at...i'm down at fort hood, from near grapevine, where u at up in the metroplex? i just replaced the oil in mine and it was burnt up...so yea seeing as i was going to have it reinforced, and a transgo shift kit installed iyll just take it to a race shop up in dallas, most likely ams, and talk to them about it. hopefully they can straighten me out, they've already helped a lot with cam selection. u might want to give them a call, they know what they're talkin to...thats who i'm goin to for my tuning fo sho! hope this helped - travis

My buddy's 97 C5 did the same thing. After he put a TransGo shift kit in, the problem went away.

Hey Skipp, Is your fliud discolored in any way? what stall are you running? We see the conditions your discribing on hi milage units, its typical wear on these units I address them with a transgo-sk. Normaly installed on rebuild. If the unit is still in good condition we'll pop em in. Hope this helps.

It still has the stock converter. The fluid did not look terribly bad, but did look a little dirty. I never thought about the Transgo, but have heard people say good things about it. Do you think this might cure the problem, or could other components be causing problems? My car is getting up there in the mileage too.

Help me too! I have the same problem with the hesitation 2-3, but no noise. Rebuilt tranny, new clutches and some added, trans-go shift kit, vacume mod, and a sy3500 in it. Good fluid level and it is not burnt or discolored. Looked at the convertor and it has not changed color as if overheating.

Hey skipp, what you have is very normal,on high mileage unit. Your kinda at a cross roads if you've got high mileage unit. It'll cost you around 400.00 to get one installed now,but if you wait it should only cost a extra 100.00 on the rebild. There are several causes for what your experienceing, all of it addressed at rebuild, normal wear items. Things are starting to wear and leak alittle. I hope this helps you.

hey oss, If you already have the transgo, you shouldn't be having problems with 2-3 hesitation.I find sometimes that clutch clearance is too loose, and causes this. before I'd get into that I'd pull the pan and replace or swap the selnoids around, see if that helps. Sometimes with the added heat of the verter we'll see lazy selinoid responce, assumeing all other things are normal. hope this helps you.

Should I get it rebuilt? Where would be the ideal place to go for something like this? Want to get it fixed, but not get ripped off.

Hey Oss, Take it to your tranny guy, he'll wanna check a few other things be fore he gets into the trans. Your clutch clearance is an internal problem,I like mine set tight, gives a real chrisp shift. Hope this helps.

skipp

i will not have any body touch my tranny's but rockwell . the last one he built for me is in my 99 lightning . i now have over a 120 passes and pulling trailers and my daily driver on this transmission . then last sunday i pulled my best 1/8 time yet a 7.6 in a 5000lbs truck . people come up to me and ask if i'm running a standard because of the way my tranny shifts at the track . i have had some of my freinds use him also , and he has not let me or my freinds down .
that is with a stock torque conveter .

What's the name of the shop? Could I also get a basic idea of price range on the rebuild, and what the price difference would be adding the Transgo? Thanks for the help!
