Default Converter Problem

Of course I just went to the track this weekend and ran twice.....

My converter is shuddering when it locks up. Is this a problem I should be worried about/how would I go about fixing it?

Thanks for everything guys!

Hi Kevin, thanks for the quick answer.

I love your product and the results I recieved with it.

I am now in a bit of a pickle....this is my daily driver, work 50 hrs a week, and I dont have the $280 to have it re-installed.

How serious is the problem? Is this something that needs done asap?

I will try and call later when the office slows down.

Thanks again!

The converter installer may have cut the o-ring on the input shaft. This would be the first thing I would look at when the converter is removed. If this is not the case, TCI will be more than happy to repair the converter. If the o-ring were cut then I would try to get the converter installer to fix it for free. When I work on customer's cars (side job), if I miss install something on their car then I pay for repairing it. It is hard to say how serious the problem is, but to be on the safe side then I would have it removed ASAP. The problem could cause some problems for the trans down the road.

If it's a big one why not increase the mph for lockup? What size is it?

what other mods have you done? Let's make sure it is not a tuning issue before you send it back.

The only mods I have are:

Lid/Filter
CAI

The shudder feels like I am going over a small pot hole. Only happens when the TC locks up. Didnt start happening till last night.

I am really worried. This is my daily driver I cant wait 1+ week for the repair, will lose my job. And on top of it I dont have the $280 to pay for the re-install. Not to mention I no longer have the stock TC.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would say take the car back to where you got it done and see what they say. You could always rent a car. They may fix the problem with the o-ring for cheap. never know. AND you NEED a tranny cooler ASAP. Have them do that while your there. The heat will eat up a A4 real fast at the track.

Little update:

Took the car back to the shop, the car now is shuddering way too much.....so I parked it and told him to get to it when he can. I have barrowed the in-laws car. <img border="0" alt="[cry]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cry.gif" />

See what he says about it, whether its the ring/converter

Thanks for the help guys.

Kevin S, I will give you a call as soon as I know something. Thank you for the quick response. Would still purchase your product if I had to do it over again.

What is this O-ring, why would someone go
cutting on a part during install, and how
should I tell my installer (most probably
the local Chevy dealership) not to mess up
the hardware, in non-misunderstandable terms,
so as to avoid this?

Is this a soft O-ring? Would this be a "wear
item" that will shorten service life relative
to other converters?

I just got a TCI SF3000 and will be getting
it on in early April.

hey Jimmyblue, This O-ring is not in the T/C. Its on the end of the input shaft. What I see more often is the wrong o-ring being installed, and will not fit the t/c, thus cutting the o-ring. Very rare are the instances of a cut o-ring with the proper o-ring installed. What I find more times than not is the guys running the old hard shrunk O-ring, it's extremly important to replace this o-ring every time you pull the converter. They get hard and brittle with normal use,I use only dealer o-rings, this o-ring is critical to proper converter lock up. Footnote: I've installed about 100 tci converters and have never had a problem, I can not say the same for some others out there. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the good info. Are there any other
parts that should be replaced during a
converter swap, that I should make sure to have?

Wouldn't have that O-ring GM P/N handy,
would you?
