Default 700r4

Who has one in their LS1 F-body? Isn't there a sponsor on here with one?

Why do you ask? Just curious.... the 700r4 is the early analog version of the 4l60E they share very, very similar rotating assemblies. Both can be built to handle a lot of power.

I want to swap from M6 to a Full Manual Reverse Valve Bodied 700R4 and have a few questions.

I have read that a few people say you can use a 4L60E cross member with it, but according to this it will not. I don't know of any off the self cross members either.

700R4 converter will bolt up the TCI 399753 Flexplate, correct? Anything else needed there? Spacers?

Will my factory torque arm bolt up to a 700R4?

What are the differences in '82-'86 and '87-'92 700R4s?

I do not like reverse valve body units on anything. They run full line pressure all of the time, which is very hard on the pump, and the rest of the geartrain. Since this an LS1, you would be better off with using the 4L60E here. As for the computer and what else is needed, you would have to talk to someone who has done this or knows "exactly" what is needed here. Ratchthed, I think should be able to help you here.

Thanks Dana...

I gotta tell you I really don't like the idea of running a 700 behind an LS engine. The 60E is a much better box for the job. It can be taken Full Manual if you are needing that function. It could be ran without a computer as well.. you would need a lock up signal but that is not a problem.

I am sure that if you were to call me and we discussed your wants and needs along with your short term and long term goals we could put the right unit to work for you. We do that all the time for guys just like yourself!

What does it take to run a 4L60e with out a computer? Just manual valve body and lockup controller?

Pretty much.

Also, if you wanted to stay automatic it really is not that expensive at all... you run the existing PCM, have it reprogrammed by HPTuners or some other outfit that is familiar with these types of conversions. Thn buy the correct overlay harness from Speertech and your up and running! That will run you around $500.00 for both.

As far as Lock Up, you could run a manual toggle switch for example.

Ratchethead, what about running a 200r4 instead of the 4l60e? The gear ratio is a lil bit closer than the 700r4 from 1st to 2nd. I know bmr sells most of the stuff to do the swap

Since there are 4r70 aode 4r70w swap parts out there and they have first gear ratios of 2.4 or 2.84 look into those. same gear spread as the 2004r but far tougher transmissions.

Well that's a good question indeed. Without knowing the combination the unit needs to live in and without having a good understanding of the budget it is difficult to say which unit is desirable.

There are many options to consider, but at the end of the day more information is required before I could give a recommendation.

Well a 200r4 would last behind a decently built ls motor without a problem. They have gone Mid 9's with a full weight turbo regal. If the power gets sick from an ls motor the I could see goin to an AOD. 200r4's are lighter and take less power to turn. But if the power level would get high enough to necessitate an AOD I would end up putting in a 4l80e. Mike Brown of the Ohio boys went low 8's on a 4l80e.
