Default trans question

I have a 4L60E with a 51 on the side and i have one that needs a bell housing that has a 49 on the side, whats the difference?

cause the one in the car was a 51 and the one with the 49 is said to be good so i was going to swap them out, just noticed the numbers were different

That has nothing to do with the numbers. What if you swapped input shafts on the 49, they'd be the same.

Sounds like one is an LS1 trans and one isn't . The longer input has a smooth .500 diameter pilot right? Not an LS1.

Any ideas on the years? Six bolt tail housing? removable bell?
PICS?!

What exactly are you doing, concourse restoration?

More info?

What car? your sig says your car is an M6. What did the other trans supposedly come out of?

Give us some clues please.

I have a 98 Z that is an auto, and the trans went out, well i had this 4l60 in the shop, it didnt have a bellhousing, I acquired it in some trading just in case this trans went out, all the sensors are the same even the trans mount, only difference is the input shaft... I dont know anything about them... I would assume if the shaft was 1" longer it would work

You have a non ls1 bolt on bell unit, To make it work you would need to swap pumps, and input shaft ot drum from the ls1 unit. And since its likely from a truck the Servo on side and the manual linkage shaft will need to be changed and you would have to then use the LS1 bell houisng and tail from your old unit also along with the converter

So just wondering... Would a 4L60E from a 2000 up truck work in my Z?

The truck unit would work, but the manual lever shaft would need to be swapped and it should at least have the better servo installed.
