Default Dropping a trans

Just wondering the easiest way to go about this. I just need to get the the front of the trans and maybe the converter. Can I just unbolt it all and lower the front of it down or what ??? What tools do I need??? I have basic hand tools, two jackstands, and a floor jack. Can I get it done with that?? Thanks.

Its not really bad to take it out. Just unplug stuff from the trans, drop crossmember, driveshaft, unbolt converter, and make sure you have some long extensions to get to the bellhousing bolts and its out. Just make sure you have the car pretty high in the air. A tranny jack helps to balance the trans when taking it out.

You can get it done with a good floor jack, and stands. But I never like to hear people say they just need to get to the front of the trans/converter. It doesn't matter what you need to do, you still need to disconnect everything and drop it to the ground.

And I've heard people say they're going to swap converters and keep the driveshaft and all connected. No that doesn't even come close to working.

I don't think you can drop just th front of a trans to get to something in the bell area you will need to remove the whole transmission

patience is the key my suggestion is to get the car as high as possible it will make things go much smoother also go pick up a tranny jack or you will need two people and one person gets in the others way>>>>i picked up a good tranny jack for $90 at my local auto zone it worked great for that pupose also i would recomend a wrench with a ratchet box end in the correct size make things easier when you get to the top bolts on the bell housing

just did a transmission swap yesterday. you gonna need about 2 feet wirth of extensions and a swivel makes it way easier to get to 2 of the bolts which are the hardest. unbolt the the crossmember and allow the trans.motor to tilt down to give you more room to the upper bellhousing bolts. there is 8 of them.

and you wil need something to turn off the motor to get the three bolts that bolt the converter the flywheel.

I would also highly suggest spending the 70 bux for a trans jack. Got mine from harbour freight. made life sooooo much easier.

well we had to quit cause we were running out of day light and I was tired of laying in trans fluid. Its basically out except for the converter bolts. Then to determine why it poors out tranny fluid and get that bad boy fixed. Oh yeah and wait for my new 4000 stall, which I will order tomorrow. yay. thanks for all the help fellas.

Be sure and check both the seal and bushing and inspect that flex plate and make sure runs true a wobbly flex plate will walk the bushing out. If you have any questions don't hesitate to call me

Yes that would certainly cause the leak. You will need to inspect the pump and pump bushing for wear or damage. Most likely the pump itself is fine if the trans was still working fine but replacing the pumps bushing and seal are a must.

You know I have seen that happen several times in various forums and it seems its always and after market converter, But for the life of me I have never been able to understand it since that hub only drives the pump. I can only guess some metal fatigue structural failure. But still it always looks strange to me when I see it.
But looking at the wear marks from the bushing on the hub there I would carefully check converter to flex plate clearance when you reinstall

Yes, thats the pump drive. It's a seperate part. They will cut the weld on a lathe, remove it and reinstall a new one. It gets welded in on a lathe also. They also cut the converter open during this.
