Default cash for clunkers read!

so i work over at fuccillo kia in greece ny and i cant tell you how dissapointed i am with how many ppl are trading in their perfectly fine lt1 or ls1's jus to get a damn 4 cyl. a kid yesterday traded in his 97 z for HYUNDAI ACCENT. i couldnt belive it this car was in perfect condition with only 80,000 but it runs great! and he ops for a lil piece of crap like that? i mean yea your gettin a great deal on a car but why trade in an f body for it jus doesnt make any sense!! the other day this lady traded her 00 trans am and i almost cried. it was a regular ta with the red and black interior 6 speed. and she got a sportage. now if you dont know much about what the dealerships have to do to these cars they take the car, drain the oil from it and pour in a clunker bomb which is jus silicate soulution (some pretty nasty stuff i might add) and the whole point is to let the car run until the engine blows. and if its not followed correctly the government fines the store 4500 dollars per car.

2000 ls1 fbody with six speed does not qualify.

2000 and older ls1 fbody with a4 does. 2001+ does not.

We just bought a case of clunker bomb, sad when you think about what it does really. Perfect tahoes and Silvys getting junked, what happened to the third R is RRR (Recycle, Reduce, REUSE)? Gov't thinks they are doing something good with this, to a point they are, but not 100%.

It's actually funny, just last weekend the Gov't changed the program slightly, there are now countless dealers around us who have been burned because they took in cars that not longer qualify, now they are stuck with the $4500

IBTL

Man, I can't believe what I am seeing. This is complete and total BS. Kind of makes me angry to think that LS1 F-bodies might not be around much longer.

At least if we don't like it, we don't have to participate in it. I know for sure that the Feds won't be getting my Formula

The worst part of the program is perfectly functional running cars are being junked. Since when is that useful or helping anything. A 97z with 80k on the clock? It is less far less than half way used up if it was taken care of. The first billion only lasted a week so hopefully they waste the next two billion and give it up. Doubt it. What a complete waste of resources. Thought the point was to conserve.....

I don't understand the point of this program. They're destroying perfectly good vehicles that could be sold or parted out? Seems like the salvage and junkyard industry would be taking a major hit. I've got to read up and see exactly what's happening.

It's okay to destroy a 1998-2000 TA as long as it's an automatic?

What the ****.. I'd drive the hell out of that 'burb or the Volvo. What do they do with them afterwards? Are they parted, crushed, what?

Not just from an enthusiast standpoint, but a common-sense point of view, but this is straight up retarded. That Volvo looks to be in excellent condition and spotless. Look under the hood. That car wouldn't bring $4500 outright? Hmmm...

they could help so many people..

heres the thing..

my mom has a 1995 aerostar ford van.. gas HOG.. no ac no heater radio barely works.. driver window doesnt work.. passenger side is dying..200+k miles.. its falling apart..

why not give or sell her one of these ones with full power/ac/radio/lower mileage car for like 500 bucks? Gov. makes money AND they help her out...

just because its a "clunker" to one person doesnt mean it is to another.. it might be A LOT nicer than what someone is currently driving..

you have to be able to have the money to buy a new car in order to do this.. some of those cars are very nice..

why doesnt anyone stand out side the dealerships and wait for something they like and offer cash for it?

what do they do with the body of the car? anyway i could get my hands on a seized car with a good body? (i know someone at a dealership that would help.. just need to know if it is possible)...

i could get a body and everything and just replace the motor for my mom.. or me for a DD...
