Car Life's Road Test Comparator - 1969
It's pretty interesting to see all the different classes of muscle cars and how they performed when they were new.

A manual Hemi Charger from 1969 is a tenth quicker than today's Hemi Charger with an automatic.
I wonder how much of a difference modern tires make on an otherwise stock classic car running in top condition?

From: HOU - yeah, you know the rest.
The only thing the old cars have over todays cars is perhaps styling. Modern cars make more power, brake better, handle better, are safer, have far more features and get better fuel economy. Modern muscle wins by a long shot.

X2 on these cars running with newer tires. All that power and torque trying to hook up on the crap rubber they had back then doesn't work to well. That isn't going to help them out brake or handle a modern car though, but they still win by a long shot for looks and badassness compared to the newer "muscle" cars in my book.

I haven't looked at that kind of list(all those old cars) in several years. Looking over the numbers, I remember why.
They probably did, but didn't add it to that article... A little late to ask 'em though.
It may have also been only about 5200 were built over the 3yr run and maybe only having it for 3yrs played a role as well.

Economy is the reason for all the added gears. Not for a need to increase mileage, I doubt Detroit would ever have bothered replacing the 3spd. If it ain't broke...
No doubt, with added gears to stretch the ratios, better economy happens. Surely a 67 427 would see increased mileage, though it wouldn't be great anyway. Would it match an LS7 today? ...
Hmm... It would be close, I suspect, but not quite there. It didn't get saddled with all that crapola emissons junk. Big bonus when you don't also have economy robbing trash attached to the engine. Still, todays stuff is good.

The pricing on those cars . They are worth a bunch more now and when the gas crisis in the 70's + insurance increases came about , you could buy them for next to nothing... Can't do that now...

that old stuff is poop. Looks like they they were anti gm by those times. My dads 396 SS chevelle went 14.-14.3 stock tires powerglide and everything. No excuses for that 396 camaro goin a 14.8. Dads 70 1/2 lt1 Z/28 went a 14.1.
