According to : http://www.camaros.org/copo

All documentation was 9560AA/AB for the cars. ZL-1 was just the engine name.

Are you talking about the current ZL1 being marketed in 2011? The current platform is the 2012 model. The original ZL1 from 1969 was never supposed to exist in the first place and only came into life because of Dick Harrel and Fred Gibbs knowing how to abuse the COPO system.

"A GM corporate edict forbade Chevrolet from installing engines larger than 400 cu in (6.6 l). Requests from dealers (notably Yenko) who were dealer-installing 427 cu in (7.0 l) engines in the Camaro caused Chevrolet to use an ordering process usually used on fleet and special orders (taxis, trucks, etc.) to offer 427 engines in the Camaro. Two Central Office Production Orders (COPO), numbers 9560 and 9561, were offered in the 1969 model year."

The original ZL1 was never supposed to exist and never marketed by GM. Don Yenko, Dick Harrel, and Fred Gibbs were the fathers of the ZL1 putting the Corvette RPO(ZL1)motor meant for ZL1 Corvettes and Vette racing program into Camaros then selling them. Someone correct me if this data is incorrect. This makes 2012 the first year GM used the "ZL1" badge to market specifically for the Camaro.

it wa still the designation for the car.

The first two ZL1 Camaros arrived at Gibb's dealership on a snowy evening in the last days ofDecember 1968. The agreement GM made with Gibb was to have ZL1 cars available for sale prior to the end of 1968. The GM factory delivered as promised.

The 2 links i listed give the impression that GM policy did not allow the ZL1 motor to be installed into the Camaro. GM did not want any motor over 400cu installed in non-Corvette passenger vehicles and only by manipulation of the COPO system used for commercial vehicle special orders did the ZL1 motor find its way into a Camaro. As you can see in the link you provided that Camaro displays no ZL1 emblem or badges.

"But Camaro could not participate, for GM had a corporate policy forbidding the production installation of an engine larger than 400 cubic inches in any non-Corvette passenger vehicle smaller than "full-size". There was an easy way around the corporate bureaucracy: a special fleet order procedure (known internally as the Central Office Production Order) normally used for special equipment on commercial vehicles like trucks or police cars."

These Camaro's were sold as COPO 9560/9561 NOT ZL1 Camaro's. ZL1 was 1 of 2 motor options the L72 being the other. Just like the current SS Camaro has the LS3 and L99 motor option but are not sold as L99 Camaro/LS3 Camaro get it?
