^All they need to do is shrink it down. There is no need for a sports car to have SUV-like interior room. Same goes for the new Corvette.

Hardly any room in the back seat of a Mustang now, definitely not for an adult. Add to that the Corvette owners want head height for helmets, etc. Neither of these cars seem large inside to me. It's all the safety equipment, crumple zones and airbags surrounding the cabin and occupants making them larger and heavier than they once were.

Add to that the requirement to please the average buyer, not enthusiast, who wants comfort seats, infotainment, luggage space to travel, golf, etc and it doesn't take long to add up the pounds and size.

Try not to talk too much common sense to your bud (gocartone), his head might explode from all the logic.

Whats truly amazing its putting these numbers down and yet its heavier than the last gen! GM truly out did them selves with this car and since they set the bar pretty damn high with just the base model they still have a lot of work ahead of them to get the almighty Z06 to improve as much if not more than the improvement made to the base model. Also since they are going to the LT1 engine this begs the question what engine are they going to put into the Z06 model? I would assume it wont be the LS7 but i could be wrong. Any Vette guys please elaborate thank you.

Yes, because it's impossible to make a lightweight RWD sports car when you can buy a STi or Evo and have a AWD sports car with 4-doors and a decent back seat that weighs 3300-3400lbs.

The Corvette weighs 3,440 lbs in Z51 trim. So it is a whole 40-140 lbs heavier than your ideal. I am sure if they decided to go with a 4 cylinder Corvette it would be substantially lighter as well, plus the drivetrain could be lightened as it wouldn't be making as much power. The 458 Italia's a lightweight RWD V8 has a curb weight is 3,350 lbs, but it does sell for $300,00+ (real world price). So I would say the Corvette is doing well for itself and I'm sure the C7 Z06 will be more in line with the 458 in weight and performance for about 25% of the price.

Improved interior materials will always weigh more
Extra gear in the transmission, bigger case, more fluid (?)

It is not one thing, but the little things add up.
I believe DI alone add 35 lbs.

^^^this also the Lambos weigh around 3400 - 3600 lbs roughly and they have AWD V12 and they move out pretty good and the GTR weighs more than the Vette with AWD and we all know that car moves out as well.

How about a double-trim system with a very barebones model for enthusiasts and a richer one for average guys who want a Corvette?

Anyways I don't like the idea of average guys driving Corvettes, it ruins the exclusivity, stops being a gearhead's dream car to become another transportation device of choice for rich middle-aged men. Just look at what happened to the Porsche 911.

That's impressive!
I'm not sure I understand the complaints about weight.
It seems that the way the car is set up now that it is at its pinnacle of performance.
Could it be lighter? Sure, but where that weight loss would be beneficial in straight line performance might hinder it in another category.
Having the right balance for power and weight and still making insane results during testing means this is more of a drivers car than anything previous.
Kudos to GM for stepping up.

I'm sure the non Z51 and other Z06 will be lighter but it performs great so it won't be that much of an issue.

And I like it that way. What's the point of a dream car you can't ever attain?

exactly if you want a rare car get the Viper. Vettes are the poor mans super car and vipers are too IMO. They are very fast but also cheap when compared to Lambos, Ferraris, Aston Martins etc... and they hang up there with them for the most part that is one of the reasons why the Vette is so desirable and why it has sold pretty well through out the years.

That "I see them all the time" argument is so played out and pointless. I see hot chicks all the time doesn't mean I get tired of looking at them and pursuing them.

Youre not supposed to be able to afford a dream car. Thats what makes it a dream, just like a veyron is my dream car. No chance of ever owning one much less seeing a bunch driving around.
