2006 Corvette Gets 6-speed Automatic with Paddle shifters
This is just silly. Paddle shifters on an Automatic are like nipples on a man. For Aesthetics only and functionally useless.

PS the good news is, at least the Corvette now gets a 6-speed automatic like the rest of the world........at last......

You would be surprised how many people want tiptronic transmissions even if they are no faster than a normal automatic. Im sure it was more of a marketing appeal than any kind of performance decision. Hopefully GM will progress and start putting 6 speed automatics in its cars.

Well would you guys rather have the 4 speed auto? But I do know what you're saying about people wanting triptronic.
I remember one of my friends got an Audi A4. I was asking him about it and I remember asking him if it was a manual. He was like "No dude! It's got a triptronic! They're soooo much better than manuals!"

the extra 2 gears will be appealing to some, seems to give the car a more exotic feel. since they are targeting the vettes performance right at some of the high priced exotics, i guess they feel the need to include all the options for those cars as well.
it doesnt matter anyway, my Z06 will have a manual tranny either way

And yes I agree, should have done the M3-SMG/Ferrari/Lambo thing and do right hand paddle to upshift, left hand paddle to downshift.

Well I knew the 6L80-E would make it into the Vette once GM hooked it up to the LS2 in the STS SAE 100 tech demo car. Good on GM for giving the lazy folks two extra gears. In all seriousness though, for those who just want a cruiser with a slushbox it's about time the automatic equipped Vette got a few more ratios. As for the buttons that act as paddles, it's more of a gimmick. The hardcore fanatics still probably still opt for the Z51 package and a stick and clutch with the nutcases going all out for a Z06. I HATE THOSE BUTTONS. My friend has tapshift on his GTP Comp G AND THEY SUCK. GM really needs to adopt the right paddle upshift/left paddle downshift layout the Europeans have been using for quite some time.
In any case, I'm glad GM stayed true to hardcore enthusiasts and stuck with a traditional stick and clutch on the Z06 (I remember when the rumors of paddle shifters were floating about for the C6 Z06 and even the '06 Mustang Cobra). Great for the slushbox guys to have a few more ratios in the regular C6s and as well as the ability to shift the gears on their own with the buttons/paddles, but I'm glad GM kept it real with the Z06.

BMW M3 SMG
BMW 330Ci SMG (with Performance Package)
As it ends up the company that makes SMG for the Non-BMW Motorsports cars uses a push-pull system like on the Vette, While the SMGII on the M3 is by another company that uses the F1 style Right/Left Up/Down system.
That said at least When BMW puts paddles on something there is a clutch behind it.

I think it is great that the Corvette is getting the 6 speed Auto.
BTW, I will be driving a 6 speed paddle shifting S4 tonight. It only has 340 HP with it's V8 but the 6 speed auto has great acceleration in pretty much any speed range.

6-speed auto in the vette.....It's about damn time!
I hate manual transmissions, but I'd love to have two extra gears.

I'm glad GM did a 6-speed automatic. If it's durable and easy to swap it will be become the popular choice for old school hot rodders and open up a whole new world for late-model hard core drag racers. As gimmicky as the paddle shifter sounds it would be a blast using it on a road course.
