The GT500KR sold for $605,000 as well. But yeah makes you wonder how much money a guy has if he spent that much to have the first ZR1. Supposedly on auto blog that same guy bought one of the first '53 vettes from barret-jackson as well for a million dollars a few years back.

The thing about the ZR1 sale was the charity. Every cent over the MSRP of the car goes to that charity. Thus it is tax deductable. If he is in a very high tax bracket, why not give it to charity instead of ol' uncle sam? It is tax time after all.

Also he go out of paying for a mark-up and essentially throwing the money away for nothing.

Guys, do a search for Ron Pratte and see what comes up. I was curious about who he was after he bid $300k on Tony Stewart's three race winning car a couple days ago. Apparently, he's spent a little bit of cash over the years. Check out some of the articles on this page...

not retarded at all. if you make millions a year, then imagine what taxes would be. i think the tax break and having the first zr1 alone may be worth it. and it goes to a good cause.

the guy who bought the ZR1 upped his own bid from 900k to 1 mil just for the hell of it, obviously he is in a high income bracket and can use the deduction. Ron Pratte is freaking ridicous with those cars. I think he spent over 6 million on barrett jackson cars in one day... everyone who is bidding there automatically gives up if they know they are against ron because he will outbid them everytime (he has a private museum I believe).... just out of curiousity why do you guys hate the B.J. auctions?? makes good television I just sit and

I love how the ZR1 brought more money than the Challenger and the GT500KR combined!

Ive been going to Barrett Jackson on and off for 20 + years now. Watching the money fly and the great cars is fantastic. There's some used car sales mentality that is kind of a turn off though. Theres also the issues with cars that were just finished the week before the auction and not being quite ready. The other thing that drives you nuts is that everyone thinks their Z28 (or fill in the blank with your favorite make) is worth 100k for the next year after the auction. It was good to see some of the Hemi cars come down vs the last 2 years.

Amen to that one Marksz71.

Besides, the tax benefits only cover the MSRP of the car so they either gotta do it for altruistic reasons, or ego reasons.

Lightbulb

He didn't just bid on the cars, he was already the highest bidder and right before the gavel came down he RAISED HIS OWN BID, spending an extra $100k more than he even had to just to be able say that he paid x amount for the car. He's done that a few times actually.
