The local news outlets just broke a story about the San Antonio Tundra plant shutting down production for the summer. After the summer they plan on resuming a reduced production. Employees will reportedly receive 60% pay.

Almost no one, no matter how big or how strong, is totally immune to these latest economic issues.

40% reduction in pay? They already work for peanuts over at Toyota. In Japan, you don't get paid for overtime and its pretty much manditory if you wish to keep your job.

True. But hey, you can't accumulate the VAST wealth/power that Toyota currently has without stepping on a bunch of people on your way to the top.
People knock domestic car companies all day long but go ask a 1960s/1970s GM employee how good they felt about their pay scale, health/education benefits and morale/job security back then.
Back before the invasion (assault?) by Toyota/Honda (and others), GM/Ford/Chrysler took damn good care of Americans/America.

I couldn't get the story to come up for whatever reason. Maybe firefox isn't liking that website right now.

This has to be for some upgrades to the plant though. Whatever though. As long as those employees can some back to their jobs. They are still getting 60% pay. Just get another job for the summer. Sucks but thats how life goes sometimes.

Nope, it's for inventory reduction due to slow sales of the trucks.

Toyota officials will announce a plan Thursday morning to shut down the Tundra production plant for three months starting in August in an effort to reduce the inventory of the slow-selling pickup truck.

According to an official close to Toyota, the company's other Tundra plant in Princeton, Ind., will stop building the truck and all Tundra production will shift to San Antonio in November.

"This is intended to take out a big chunk of inventory and take some pressure off the sales staff," the official said.

Rare misstep for Toyota. Good thing they aren't dependent on trucks to stay in business.

Actually, I wish they were.

It is only a "good thing" for them.

On the contrary. It's possible to come up with a rather long list of Toyota styling or marketing blunders; The Echo, the T100, the 7/8 scale 1st generation Tundra, the Previa.

Or you can break it down into other current poor gas mileage vehicles such as the Landcruiser, the FJ, the Highlander, or the V8 4 Runner which gets worse gas mileage than a full size Suburban with the 5.3. American perception is not reality when it comes to Toyota. My Rav4 only gets 23 mpg average and it is by far the worst vehicle I own.

Imagine that! A Surburban owner is more environmentally friendly than a Toyota 4 Runner owner. Toyota has this image of being so great and good and being a friend of the environment! The public makes these gross generalizations that are really unfounded when you break it down.

How? It didn't sell well, totally crushed/trumped in sales by the competition, aka: the number one and number two selling vehicles (Chevrolet full size pick up and the Ford F-150) in the U.S. at that time.
