GM & F partnering up
#25
According to an article in the Oct. '96 issue of PHR titled "Chevy's All-New Small Block V8: The LS1", the LS1 was designed on the QT by "a band of hard-nosed, dyed-in-the-wool, two-valve push-rod engineers" at GM in response to GM Corporate's decision to award the development and production contract for the LT5 to Lotus.
Ford had nothing to do with it.

Why would you want an LS stang? Im happy knowing I can walk away from any piece of sh*t ford. That would suck to race some 2010 mustang with an LS against my F body and loose to A) A ford, and B) the same motor technology that grew up in my chevy! The worst part would be listing to the mustang driver brag about how he won and how "amazing" his POS ford is. F-body = top dog. Mustang = Taxi cab motor.

You should pick up that book. Has lots of good suggestions plus it goes over the history of how/why the LS-based motors were designed, from the mouths of engineers who worked on it. I'll concur though that LS's and SMF's have alot in common, plus I find it funny that they make kits to run ford distributors and fuel pumps on ls1's. (also that alot of hot rodders use ford headers as a starting point for LS1 headers) But no, as far as that book says anyway, ford had nothing to do with it.

me too...
I thought he meant "leave the trucks to Ford" because the market is not demanding trucks like they use to, but instead, smaller fuel efficient vehicles. But it seems I am wrong for assuming that.
Back to topic. I think that sharing R&D is a good idea for both companies to do right now given their financial situations.

The Ecotec is better than the Duratec, the HF3.6L is better than the Ford 3.5L, the ANTIQUE 4.3L is STILL better than the Ford 4.0L....the list goes on.

I like the chevy trucks, my 3/4 avy has never done me wrong.
However, I think there exists the capacity for a mass simplification and some serious cost streamlining if they wouldn't play a game of one-up-manship against each other and instead collaborated. Ford has exciting products, as does GM; both don't make much an effort here in the states however.
Eventually after the foreign make rivals are dealt with, the biggest threat to Detroit still looms, Congress and it's pandering to the greenies.

No ****. I say GM trucks FTMFW!
For instance, I drive a 04 Sierra with the 6.0L high output LQ9 in it, that truck is AMAZING. It drives, handles, and runs better than other truck I've driven. How many trucks can keep up with C5 and C6 Vettes? Not many...But that one sure does...

I think Ford has much better market penetration with their super duty line.
I'd like to see Ford front axles coupled to GM 10.5 and 11.5 FF rears and a shared diesel.
Now that I think about it, there might be some potentiality to Ford and GM developing a large displacement diesel together now that International and Isuzu are no longer developing diesels for Ford and GM.
To most folks, the badge is really just skin deep.
