I bought my car when it was 3 years old and the buttons and ***** were pretty beat up. As soon as I got it I had the dealer replace the whole nav unit, buttons and all, and more than a year and a half later everything still looks brand new.
I was so careful, but after just over 4 yrs and about 44k miles, two buttons have finally started the dreaded flaking.

I think this is correct. If I'm not very careful, my fingernail will hit the **** first, and that seems to be the culprit.

Whoever the heck tested these ***** for use in our NAV units did NOT consider fingernails. A small oversight that is so visible to the consumer gets a car a bad rap. Wish there was some way to "harden" them somehow.
