The k&n kit isnt much thicker, and metal absorbs more heat than plastic ever will. Thats why the k&n kit comes a plastic lining and with a plastic snorkel versus a metal one. Search home made intakes for the v, with metal piping, the guys who did this said their intakes get super hot quick, but i can touch my k&n when the motor been running just fine.

There is a huge difference between a foot long piece of metal piping that the air travels through and a flat piece. i agree that it may make a tiny difference, but i dont see how a fully inclosed plastic box(stock intake) wouldnt keep the same heat out or more as the trash can not to mention the air duct that comes through the front of the car into the stock airbox. It may look better then stock but as far as efficiency i dont agree it is more beneficial to the motor. to the OP, nice work cutting it to make it fit it doesnt look bad.

Yes this is always a debate with stock air box with drop in filter vs larger cone filter. but both will agree a blocking plate be it the stock air box or a sealed block off plate to keep heat from the engine entering the aftermarket filter is very effective in keeping ait temps down.

Intake looks good.

Why not seal up the edge nearest the fender too? I may have overlooked this, but did you make a duct from the stock air duct behind the grill? If so, could you take a picture of that?

The trash can was not that big. I removed the stock duct behind the grill... its just open behind there. Do you still need a picture of that?
