Cam guys... come on in!!!
Looking to do a cam in my V. I really wanted to get heads too but depending on price, i think i might stick with my LS6 heads and just upgrade the springs and pushrods to run the cam i want until i get the money to buy a nice set of heads for it.
I also plan to get the FAST intake, TB, Mass air and kooks LT's with cutouts but those will come gradually along with other things after the heads/cam or at least the cam.
What cam would you guys suggest? Im looking for something that will make strong power through the whole range. I want something thats going to sound ridiculous but still be perfectly streetable as i drive my car daily.
Cams im considering...
-TS MS3 cam
-TS MS4 cam
-HPE S Cam
-HPE S+ Cam
-HPE Megadeath cam
Any others you guys suggest that would fit the sound and power range i want? All of those cams are in the .605/.615 lift range on the exhaust side.
LMK!

Any of the cams listed are gonna suffer drastically without long tubes. Until you do long tubes your not gonna see nearly the gain you will with them. Having a spot on tune will be where you gain driveability and I wouldnt necessarily go with the cams above without doing long tubes but thats just my opinion.
Basically what your gonna be doing is for example, adding a turbo....but putting a 2" downpipe on it. Your pushing more air but leaving it no where to go after its gone through the motor. I think you get the point.
Long tubes first, then cam, then intake manifold and throttle body, then you can do heads if you want.

Headers are going to hold U back about 10 15 hp , but you can still cam it without LT's . Many other F-bodie owners do.
Theres a member on this forum with a ls6 trying to hit 400 on stock manifolds .
I forget who but rember the post.

If your're on a budget, then get high flow cats & a tune 1st. If you get a cam afterwards, you'll have to Re-Tune.
If you go for headers, then make sure you get high flow cats with the headers, then Tune.
Putting a high performance cam etc., in a high mileage engine is not advisable.
Remember: More horsepower = more heat = more stress = $$.
Being satisfied is not a bad thing.

I had the TSP 233/239 cam on a 112lsa in my SS. I will be going with either a 230 XFI intake lobe and a 234 XER exhaust lobe on a 114 lsa or doing a 229/235 LSR lobed cam. The MS3 is a dog down low. With a heavy vehicle like the V you will want power under the curve to get this pig moving. I would do a "moderate" as in low 230 intake lobe with a good set of heads ie AFR, TFS etc... for a nice streetable combo with a ton of power under the curve. The MS3,4 etc.... will dyno more but the on the street the car with more usable power will always win. Dynos dont win races.

I agree with "big reg" you dont need to go really high with the duration to make power. The car will feel much faster through the rpm range with a cam that makes great power under the curve. I will prob put something around a 228/232 in mine.

Not quite the same build since I have a maggie, but I have a Speed Inc SC2 cam in my car. It drives really good, but you can tell there is a cam. I wouldn't go much bigger for a daily driver, but you may be more tolerant to a large cam than I am.

Here's my cam write up, with probabaly more info that you ever wanted:
https://ls1tech.com/forums/dynamomet...p-45-rwtq.html
Afew thoughts:
- I'd definately do the supporting mods first (i.e. headers, and open up the intake tract).
- Fast, Reliable, Cheap: Pick two, and don't be surprised by your results. I did fast and reliable, but paid for it. 105k miles on my car now (daily driver), and still running strong (but it cost).
- I'd get a custom cam spec'd exactly for your needs.
Good luck,
Chris

Thanks for all the replies guys! And yes i know... being satisfied would save me money and the headache of breaking things but what fun is that? lol
Yes, my car has 104k on it and its my daily for the most part. I have a streetbike and another car i drive occasionally but the vast majority of my driving is done in the V. I knew getting into it that it would be my daily so its doing its job.
As far as a cam, i guess i should look more at what power it will make where i need it as opposed to picking something for sound. I just love the monster thump of a BIG cam and coming from a caddy makes it even better! lol
Im looking into kooks and intake options as well but yes, i am on a budget. More than a full-time student working a full-time job puts a damper on the fun, time and the budget.
With the mileage my car has, am i pushing it modding it now? My thoughts upon purchasing it was that a heads/cam combo would give it a new and fresh top end and these LSX motors are pretty strong bottom end wise. I figured id go built eventually anyway but money doesnt permit it right now or anytime soon for that matter. I was hoping the motor would hold up (which i think it would) until i get a fix for the weak rear and save the money to build a block.

I had 12x,000 mile son my 98 SS psraying for over 60k of them. The car got ran hard and even when i sold it it was still going mid 11s with the mods in my sig. So no, modding a higher mileage car isnt bad as long as its been maintained.
As far as an intake manifold, many many many people upgrade from the LS1 intake to the LS6 because its a great flowing intake. I wouldnt waste money on a FAST until you do heads. Id put that money into headers and do cam and long tubes. Youll see 70rwhp or so from just those. Then heads and intake manifold will give you about the same depending on heads choice and tune.
Just remember, with a cam.....its not all about peak hp. if you gain 40-50rwhp across the entire rpm range, its gonna run better then just making that extra 75hp at one rpm. I guess usable power is what im saying.

I slipped my cam install into the end of last week. Saturday had it trailered to Corvettes of Dallas and dyno'd 379/347. My lowest torque was 301. I have the torquer 2 cam and PRC dual springs with chomeloy hardened push rods from TSP.
COD's dyno has been notoriously known for numbers 15-20 under other local area dynojets. I was kind of PO'd on my numbers until i talked to a couple of vette owners who said they have seen +20 HP/ +15 TQ on other dyno jets with no change in mods.
So considering the fact i have stock mani's, stock intake, stock TB, stock cats and stock mufflers (gutted)... ill take 50% of the 20/15 and call it a 389/355 dyno. Not bad considering im not nearly done modding. I just chose to get the cheapest (all be it hardest) mod out of the way.
