CTS-V rear diff carnage - another one bites the dust
So my diff grenaded the other night. No, it wasn't a 5k clutch drop either. It broke as the car was getting under way from a stop. It split the case from front to back, as you can see in the pics. The bolts that hold the front were bent, stripped, or broken and that seems to be where the breakage originated.
Not sure yet what route to take fixing it. Find a case and swap in as many of my good parts that there are? Is it the same carrier as a regular CTS? Why can't there be a reasonably priced good fix for this, instead of putting another inferior piece in! My diff had a slight whine to it, but was pretty good otherwise and the whine wasn't horribly noticeable.
Expensive weekend!

looks like it broke in the exact same spots as mine. Reason why I bought a pinion brace even though some say they arent good.
Good luck with your fix, I though about swapping but ended up just finding a used diff online and went with that.
But If you have the new cash the new gen diffs for 1600 are the ****. Much stronger.

Ironically I had a pinion brace on until a couple months ago. Left it off when I switched diff bushings, thinking it'd be okay since I don't beat on the car much.
Maybe it would have saved it. Anyone know of any used diffs laying around?

The non-V versions of the diff can be had for $200 on ebay. Swap your internals in and you should be golden...make sure you get one from 06-07 CTS or SRX
EDIT: this should be a feasible option, but i dont think anyone has tried. One guy is doing it now (check out the other thread).

Yeah, I plan to keep the car until the '09+ cars get a little cheaper. If I could find a cheapish used one I would throw that in, otherwise I'll order a new one and go from there. Part number is 25873498 according to what I'm finding. GMParts Direct has it for $1399 or so plus their retarded shipping charges... looking to see what I can find better than that.
Car is stock aside from BMR wheelhop kit (bushings only - no bar) and wheels. (C5 is my play car)
Rarely if ever got any wheel hop out of it.

Actually the pinion is trying to climb. That is why it lifts the top of the case. As the tires meet resistance the pinion is trying to spin the ring gear but it can't. The case gives way and the pinion walks up the ring gear instead of spinning it.

Yeah I think the pinion area is where the breakage started.
Ordered a new diff yesterday... supposed to be here in a week or so. When this diff is out maybe the case would work for mocking up a girdle?
