Default How-To: Remove 3rd brake light without removing GM factory FLAT spoiler?

My 3rd brake light has been sporadically working. Sometimes it flickers sometimes it works fine. I have no problem fixing it but my problem is that I just installed a GM flat mounted spoiler. I didn't drill holes to fasten the spoiler, I secured it with alot of double sided tape. I tried removing the center license holder/backup light assembly but the light prevents it. I think if I were to try and trim some of the studs off of the license plate holder it would allow me to remove it and the 3rd brake light. Anybody ever try this or know of a way to get it out?

Did you tape the spoiler to the light? I don't see how the spoiler could block the movement of the assembly otherwise.

No, the spoiler is not taped to the light, but the spoiler overhangs the light slightly.

I bolted my spoiler on and have always had to loosen in quite a bit when removing that access panel.

Your best bet would be to reinstall the spoiler with bolts.

Ouch..in that case rip it off and re-tape....it's a pretty tight fit to get that panel off.

Here's what you do...

Buy this and this. Remove the spoiler, Use the wheel on a drill and get the previous adhesive, do what you need to do and then re-apply 3m and re-mount.

Same as mine..if you start shortening bolts and sliding it out you risk scratching the trunk. Anyway to bolts back in? I can't remember what the bottom of the spoiler looks like.

I don't see anyway of adding bolts to the spoiler.

My biggest problem is taking the spoiler off. I used a lot of 1" double sided 3M tape.

Ouch!

I would get some goo-gone or similar and spray it down the trunk lid and let it soak into the adhesive, then maybe a plastic scraper to release the tape on the front of the spoiler.

Could you epoxy the bolts back in place? Or epoxy a nut in place where the screws were then bolt through the trunk. Just use short bolts!

All you'd have to do is drill small holes into the bottom of the spoiler to countersink the bolts/nuts.

Goo gone will mess up the clear coat.

Run a fishing string through it. Start at one side (front to back) and saw your way down it.
