Tire question for V1
I'm taking delivery of my new to me 05 416 ctsv in a week. The owner admittedly stated he put tires on it that he wishes he hadn't. The are 245's all the way around. The car has ground control coilovers on the low setting and 18 x 9 team dynamic racing wheels on it. What's the widest I can go that will fit the rim and the rear end? I have no problem with the fronts, but making 540 rwhp, I'd like more meat out back.
Also and recommendations on tires? I don't want M/T's or 555r this time around. I used to blow though those in 3-4k miles on my Lightning.
Thanks.

If the fronts are stock (245/45) then the rear should be 275/40. This will get you very close sidewall height.
The OP probably wants a wider tire. But I don't know about the TD offset. They are however pretty popular. I'm sure someone will chime in as to how wide you can go with them.

square 245/45, 255/40, 265/40 or 275/35
staggered 275/35, 275/40 or 285/35 back with 255/40 or 245/40-45 comparable height fronts
The TD wheels are .5 wider but also move the tire further away from the hub side compared to stock wheels making the car have a wider track. This can cause the front to rub on the inner fender lining rivots when the wheels turned of hitting a bump using stock height tires or wider tires. With stock sized conti dw's tires and stock suspension with td wheels I have burned off a few fender rivots.

With the same size wheels all around, I'd try to keep the tires the same size all around, as well. 275/40 18 may be too wide for the fronts. But a 265/40 18 may do you well.

With that power I wouldnt sacrifice traction for mileage personally. I really like the new M/T ET Street II's. They arent gonn last like 555rs but itll put the power down. Im really not aware of any drag radial on the market that is gonna last like a 555r and have traction like a m/t.

Just got some new tires put on today...got a hell of a deal at $168 ea. and went staggered 245/45 18 front and 275/40 18 rear and I have to say it looks awesome IMO. The rears are 10.5" wide now, which looks a whole hell of a lot more manly, if nothing else. They are the exact same height front to rear, however, the rear look to be a lower profile for some reason.
Also, it looks like I could go another 1" wider on the rear wheels with no problem and get 285's or 295's on there. You can see I was on borrowed time, lol.

Turbo, Im facing this same dilemma and was debating sticking more tire on my 10 inch rims.
I read somewhere that you only get the traction from the width of the rim and that cramming fatter tires on is only for aesthetics. something about the contact patch being the same or distorted because of the difference between rim and tread size
Im not a tire afficianado but it made sense to me. Does anyone know if this is true or not?
