Default supra rear diff

so ive tried searching this site and elsewhere on the internet and ive seens the question brought up before, but it doesnt look like anybody has attempted it. am i wrong here, do my search skills just suck? i dont know, but after having supras and lexus' i know that the rears in them are basically bulletproof. i am thinking about swapping in a mkIII (87-92) supra lsd in my cts-v. i have already talked to 1 very well know company about making the axles and i havea local sourave that can do the driveshaft in any configuration i would want, aluminum, steel, carbon, 1pc, 2pc etc. i feel that i could do this with much more reasonable pricing than creative steel, especially if i just bought like 5 sets of axles, driveshafts and my own hand built brackets. you guys please give me your input.

They may not handle the torque (no flame).

If you do it, post pics.

Have at it! Always like options! However, I think why the supra rear is not ideal is because they are rare. Sourcing one may be a problem, and expensive.

Not sure why everyone hates on CS's price. The drive shaft is 1k, putting together a good 8.8 diff will be around 900-1k (+modified cover) The axels that I got are good for 1000hp so I know they have to be somewhere around another grand, then you have their brackets, which they engineered, tested and put into production. Which is something I do not even want to know how many man hours and time investment that took. So...this is a capitalist country and if you're smart you dont give things away for free or even break even. So then you try to turn a profit which means a mark up. So at 4150$ with 3500$ worth of parts thats a 15% mark up. And to me for the easy of having it done...=a decent deal. All I have to do is remove and replace, problem solved. The question is, is that 15 % or 650$ worth your time and effort. Then there is always the opportunity to souce your own 8.8 and internals to save a little extra $.

But again! rock on man! I look forward to this project!

i have access to alot of supra parts. the diffs are actually very easy to find in the tuner community because so many people have lost interest with the mkIII supras. cs's $1000 driveshaft seems pretty steep to me. i can have one made for several hundred less. and ill prolly only have about $6-700 in my axles and hopefully the will be good to approximately 6-700hp msaybe more. idk. and i am gonna try running a bone stock used supra diff not to be cheap, just bc i wanna know how itll hold up.

Do you have an estimate of what it would cost compared with ford 8.8? would the installation be any easier?

there was another guy who just had a custom 2 piece drive shaft for his V (stock diff) through another shop and it ran 950$. Carbon fiber would be way more expensive 1500$+ . Aluminum 1 piece may be cheaper, steel would even be cheaper but also heavier.

I can buy a 8.8 differential for $65 at pull and pay. I have not seen many Supras around these parts. Idk which Lexus model has the same rear diff but the Ford stuff is so cheap and plentiful it is hard to beat. I love to see people's creativity though. Make me eat my words.

What Bowtie said ^^

More options for diff are always beneficial, would love to see if you can get something working. If the price is considerably less than the DIY 8.8 (once you factor in brackets, axles, driveline) and proves reliable then I may be interested.

i totally agree with you but i dont have access to any good junkyards that are within reasonable traveling distance and that dont conflict with my work schedule. i have to have everything shipped to me. lol. it kinda sux. hopefully ill be moving soon though.

if i dont decide to turn this into a more mass-produced kit ill reveal all the companies that ive talked to that have agreed to manufacture the parts for me. not trying to be an ***, just not trying to cut my own throat either. i can probably get u a price tomorrow for a 1pc though. if u wanted a price for a 2pc id have to take them my car. it, im sure, would be considerably more expensive

I have purchased 2 driveshafts from Shaftmasters in Michigan. I checked their site and while there is no CTS-V listed on their site there is a upgrade listed for 2010+ Camaros http://shaftmasters.com/5thgecadrup.html This could be a option no matter what swap we do.

Yeah but the Camaro driveshaft is similar to ours. I have talked to them on the phone cool guys small shop and great prices. I am sure they can do anything. I had them build a .090 steel driveshaft and a aluminum one too.
