Steering Wheel Mod
Here is a mod I did to my air bag (yes I know it's not the best idea to cover the air bag with vinyl). Was sick of the plastic center, getting rid of as much of the plastic inside as possible (recently wrapped my stereo cover & HVAC control in suede & had the center vent and door latch pieces hydrodipped will add pictures once I get everything back together).
I wrapped it in leather patterned vinyl and got the cadillac emblem off of a womens purse from e-bay. The only trouble I had is I added padding to the vinyl to hold the emblem which made wrapping a bit of a biotch, need to tighten up the right side a bit tomorrow when it's not so late.
Here are photo's

I applaud the effort, but not the results. If I get to the point in my build where all I can do are cosmetic modifications, I'll probably either modify a V2 steering wheel, or have my existing one reupholstered and hydrodipped. This is a job for the professionals, IMHO.

+1 on the airbag going off. You'll be wearing a wreath and crest facial tattoo for many, many weeks while in the hospital. Just hope the nurses don't hear it came from a purse.

i like the layout of the stock centerpiece on our steering wheels but the actual wheel itself sucks , i would like to find someone that can retrofit a racing type wheel http://ocarbon.com/blog/2010/02/damo...teering-wheel/

Haha you guys crack me up. I agree the padding is too much, going to try no padding. The emblem is metal, not a cheap stick on, has clasps in the back.
Fuzzy good luck finding a pro that will cover the airbag, you can't hydro dip the airbag (electronics in water bad) and nobody with a business that has insurance will touch these, I tried.
Would love to see if you could retrofit a V2, the mount and electronics would need modifications and I personally don't like to screw with any airbag wiring, that said I would love to see it.

Metal emblem, that thing will kill you. Ever had an airbag go off in your face? That hunk of metal will probably go right through your skull. You might be turning a relatively minor accident into a really bad one.

Not concerned about the emblem, warnings noted.. When the airbag deploys, the plastic cover does not hit you in the face and yes I have been hit by an air bag before.
I've been mulling it over today and I'm considering trying the suede I wrapped the rest of my interior in which would be really easy to wrap with or the vinyl without the foam, the foam is causing the main issue, perhaps no emblem too. I've scoured the net and flea bay for an emblem that would work without foam with no luck, hard to get something that mounts but isn't cheap *** looking like the stock emblem, maybe nothing will work.
Back to the drawing board, I'll try a few variations this weekend see if anything fits the bill, sucks cause the rest of my interior is ****, this steering wheel just makes the car look so cheap.
Wish the v2 wheel was an easier swap, love that one.

The stock airbag cover is made to rip down the middle when the bag goes off and is made to take the emblem with it. This, well...... is not. Basically it can and will go wherever it wants. Good luck.

Dead wrong, have you seen the stock emblem removed? It is not designed to rip in half, I will be happy to post pictures with the emblem removed. This airbag is designed to flip up, large pivot at the top, small plastic pieces on the sides and bottoms that tear in the event of deployment.

Thanks I agree. Embroidered emblem is a thought, I'm kind of leaning towards no emblem, embroidered patch may look a bit tacky but maybe if I get the material embroidered before wrapping.

I would have went with a suede material and got my steering wheel done with it.
