Default What's an 8.8 T bird rear worth?

I have been thinking about doing an 8.8 swap in my 05 V. I found one on Craigslist, it's a complete brake to brake pullout from a T bird. He is asking $450 OBO? Is it a good deal or too much? Also what all besides the Diff could I actually use from this setup or is that all I would use?

It's too much because all you can use is the diff as far as I know. The cast iron diffs have been bought for as low as $50 from what I've seen here but fair market is probably between $100 to $200 bucks.

What's the gear ratio? Some are going 3:55 others 3:73 but you'll need to research it to make your own mind up.

Happy hunting!

All Tbird IRS 8.8's are 28 spline, so you will need a new limited slip unless you want to run the 28 spline. The manual trans super coupes all had a limited slip and 2.73s while the autos had 3.31 or maybe 3.27. I believe the older ones were LSD and newer (94-95) were open on the automatics.

Sounds like unless I was going to use the whole thing it wouldn't be worth it. Just thought I would ask. Thanks for the info.

The 1993 - 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII has a aluminum 8.8 diff with 28 spline.

all t birds had 28 spline. you can use the case but everything internally will have to be swapped. im running the tbird iron case and used an explorer 31 spline carrier with cobra carbon clutches and new spiders (just for the hell of it) with 3.55 gears. i picked my case up for 50 bucks and sold the internals for 60.. i still have the 3.27's if anyone wants em

Like they have said, all you want is the case out of that.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/cadillac-...ld-thread.html

A few facts found in above thread:

I am going to start the facts list right here at the top so it is easy, even for Nancy!

1. All 8.8s considered for this swap have the same cover, so pick the one you want.
2. You can get an Iron or Aluminum differential case.
3. 99 Cobra's have a 28 Spline carrier. 01,03-04 had 31
4. The factory carrier that comes in the T-Birds and Mark 8's is a 28 spline unit.
5. You want a 31 spline for the true Trac.
6. The 8.8s IRS are found in the following vehicles:

1989-1997 Thunderbird Supercoupe (SC)(All Posi)
1992-1997 Thunderbird V-8 models with rear disc brakes(some posi)
1992-1997 Lincoln Mark VIII (All al carrier, most non-posi-traction)
1989-1992 Mercury Cougar XR7, supercharged V-6 (All posi)
1993-1997 MC V-8 with rear disc brakes(some posi), after 94 all Cougs were XR7’s

No, The Thunderbird was discontinued in 1997.

The Mustang cobra 2003 and 2004 had Ford 8.8 IRS rear end with 31 spline.

Tbird supercoupes were made 89-95 and the 94-95 automatic cars were open differentials. I guess that doesn't matter since they were all 28 spline. Wouldn't a 31 spline carrier from a truck be missing the c-clip grooves for irs?

Yes but will still work. It is physically impossible for the cv's on the V to slide out once everything is installed. I ran a truck posi for approx 3,000 miles and one track day and had zero issues. If you want you can have the spider gears machined so that they are the same as an IRS car.

I removed the C-clip on my Mark VIII and she still running fine after 15K miles.

No Joke. I have a friend selling a rear diff for $150.
Just the housing for 150$? The cheapest I can build an 8.8 complete differential for is 720$ and that is me setting it up. 1020$ when I have Jason at TDP set it up.

Housing and stock internal.
$720 a good price. I had a shop quote me about $900 with parts.

The shop was called Pylebros in Baytown Texas.

720?? thats with a new diff i assuming. heres what i did and a break down of it. got a complete irs tbird complete case and diff. i took it apart and had the case powdered. found an old explorer with a 31 spline true trac. used the tru trac but replaced the clutches and spiders just for peice of mind. got a new set of turd racing 3.55's and a rebuild kit. set it up my self and it might have came to 350 bucks by the time i was done.

the oem true tracs are proven to take a beating so a stocker will get you by if you dont wanna or have the coin for an after market carrier.
