Default Ed Mod thread

Can anyone link me to the Ed Mod thread? I'd like to finally get around to doing this, but can't find the thread. I've been searching for 30 minutes.

"Ed Mod" was a term I coined back when we were fighting with H&R springs that dropped us 2-3x more than advertised. "EdmundGTP" (?) came up with a solution that I've been running for a few years now and has stood the test of time to this point. Basically just a hard-durometer "donut" cut out to shim the top and/or bottom of the spring inside its perch. I'm running a ~3/8" on the top AND bottom of my rear springs and it rides at a perfect height now. No tire rub, etc. OP - search threads that I've posted in/started. Most titles have "H&R" and "lowering" in the titles. You'll find all the info there. What exactly were you looking for?

Pretty sure he's referring to the suspension mod where take a 3/8 sheet of rubber and cut a disk that will fit just inside of the rear spring perches in order to raise the rear of the car slightly because the H&R's tend to sag or sit too low for peoples liking.

Here ya go...

Sounds like something I'd be very interested in. Cars sits way too low for my liking, but I got it with the H&Rs and stock height is too high.

I highly suggest it. I was taking up the issues of the springs lowering so much more than advertised with H&R directly, and got to a point where they were requesting some specific measurements and so on. Unfortunately, to he honest, I just ran out of ambition and didn't have the time or desire to follow through with them though. There was definitely going to be a hang up with their lack of knowledge about the Nivomat shocks and the MM (or similar) spacers though. They were under the false assumption that the shock spacers affected the static height of the suspension and contributed to the issue (which they don't...I know this from experience).

Anyway... do the mod if you're not happy with ride height man. There are literally zero adverse effects from it. You might have to do a little trial and error with what size spacer makes you happiest, but that's really not a big deal. I'm actually going to be adding a 1/8" spacer to the FRONT as well... sometime, anyway.

I'm also doing it to reduce the chance of tire rub on hard turns and speed bumps. I've got wider rear wheels and tires.

That's why I got into this too. 19x10's with 275's out back. H&R's lowered more than 2", so I was getting tire rub quite frequently. This is definitely an easy, cheap, and safe remedy. Seems to be standing the test of time too.

If I were going to do this, I would want to raise both front and rear. Methinks the front is harder to raise since it's on the strut.

I think a spacer under the shock's lower mount would be all that's needed. However, bringing the rear up 3/8" won't give enough rake to be noticeable.

Yes, the front will be a little more involved since you'll have to remove the strut assembly and compress the spring in order to get access to the perch where your "spacer" will go. Also, if you wouldn't want to put a slit in your spacer in order to get it around the shaft of the strut, you'd have to pull the spring entirely in order to install the spacer over the shaft. Still, not a huge deal. No worse than changing the strut itself, which is what I'll be doing. Picked up a used set with minimal mileage that i'll swap in when I do these front spacers.... might as well while I'm in there.

It all depends... on a variety of things.

I've got approximately 3/8" spacers on the top AND bottom of the spring and I think the ride height is perfect. I can fit 1 finger between my fender lip and the top of my summer wheels/tires. Closer to 2 fingers with the OEM winter tires/wheels. With the stand-offs removed from my mightymouse shock spacers, the nivomats now kick in exactly when I want/need them to, rather than being completely inoperable with them being installed as originally instructed. With minimal/no weight in the trunk or back seat, the nivomats don't mess with my ride height at all. But when I've got a few humans in the back seat or 10 big bags of mulch in the trunk, the nivomats adjust for the extra load and the height gets pumped back up to a safe level. It took a lot of dickin' around, but I'm finally happy with the rear. Now I just want the front end raised a 1/4" or less. ........I'm a little OCD.
