Team Dynamics center caps? What's the deal?
So what's the deal with these center caps? I just bought a set of wheels from trinitytek and he says they don't come with caps and adapters are $126.90. But after see these pics, do they come with caps or not? And do I need the adapters? I emailed him back to confirm if these new wheels actually need the adapter as some have gotten wheels with caps and they even fit while some have gotten wheels with no caps and no means to attach them.
I would assume that by now they would have figured out a way to get caps on them but the reply from trinitytek was pretty vague. Any ideas? The silver wheels were supposed to be the hard ones to fit the caps on from what I gather. But in his post on these pics, he said he bought them and just put hem on. So I'm confused lol

Caps schmaps... Where the hell did he get those tires? Lol I've been wanting a set of those for ages, can't find a set.
I thought the guys that ran stock center caps shaved some of the cap down a bit maybe? I don't remember, it was an old thread on CF. And I looked at it like 2 years ago.

It's been a while but this was the contact info he posted a while back
Here is the low down on the tires. This is my secret source so be discreet when sharing outside the V posse:canttalk:. They are from the Grand Am series and range from $75 to $100. Mine were 100% tread left for $100.

The caps come with them. Trinitytek was unsure when I bought mine too but they were in there. The rear hub centric rings on my car stuck out too far to use the rears. Make sure you mount the wheels without the caps and then snap them on or at least try to. You'll see right away if the rears will work. I had to bevel the ring on my rear hub so the tabs on the cap could reach the groove in the wheel.
I'm unaware of any adapters unless they are wheel spacers. I think some people have used them.

I have a thread with more detail you can find if you want a recap of my experience. I'll probably grind a little more this spring before I put them back. You have to be careful mounting them or the cap knocks loose and doesn't end up fully seated. And no matter how you explain it to a tire shop, they don't listen. I didn't grind enough to allow you to put the cap on after the wheel is mounted. That would be ideal.

Found it

But just got this email from trinity
Yes they don't make the ones that take caps anymore due to fitment issues. we had adapters custom made for the racing wheels.

Will be interesting. Please post pics, whichever you get. He seemed pretty surprised that I got center caps with mine too lol. I gave him all the details about what I did to make them work.
Maybe he passed the info along. Maybe he's opening the boxes and ******** the caps to avoid hearing about it. Probably neither.

The Continentals come up on eBay every once and a while and on racingjunk.com (I go get a scrub set tomorrow) plus are often on HoosierTire in the discontinued section. https://www.hoosiertire.com/discontinuedtires.htm

Here's my napkin sketch of the specific interference. Left shows the hub, right shows the inside measurements of the center cap from the tabs to the hub face as well as the axle clearance in the center. It doesn't show the groove im talking about, but it is blocked by the hub center until I created the relief shown at the bottom.

That black on black looks good. Figured it was easier to get silver and make them black if I wanted versus the other way around. Plastidip is holding up really well on a friends wheels.

And here they are on Stealth Grey with the Continental tires.
My wheels were bought a number of years ago, before TD started offering center caps. I'm not sure what exactly was changed on the wheels, but I guess it's the presence of the lip that isis referred to - my wheels don't have a lip, and I'm guessing the center bore area isn't thick enough for a center cap. I guess that's why Trinity Tek mentioned creating an adapter for the race style wheels.
As already mentioned, the Continental/Hoosier tires are Grand Am take-offs from the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge (CTSCC), and (for our cars) come in 275/35-18. (Since it's a spec tire series, there are only certain sizes available, but that 275/35-18 is the one that will work for us.) You'll sometimes see them referred to as GAC tires (Grand Am Continental), but CTSCC is the current series name. There are a number of companies that sell them (along with a variety of other used racing tires):
- JPH Global (no website that I know of, jphglobal1 at gmail, advertises on a variety of forums with username JPJP. I get an email update every month or two from him.)
- John Berget Racing Tires (same one mentioned earlier, http://www.jbracingtires.net/ - website doesn't always seem up to date, probably best to email or call them)
- can be found on Ebay, as already mentioned
Note that you can also find Continental slicks that the big boys run (Daytona Prototypes and LMP cars). Those come with slick sizing (for example, 325/680-18 - 325mm section width, 680mm diameter) rather than passenger tire sizing (like 275/35-18 - 275mm section width, 35% aspect ratio), and also come in a few different compounds (GT-I, GT-O, GT-R). According to Hoosier:
My understanding is the true slicks are probably more tire than any street car needs, as our lack of downforce means the tires don't get enough loading to get them up to temperature. So stick with the CTSCC tires.

The lip is on the hub not the wheel. There is a groove in the center bore of the wheel that the cap clips into and that's where the measurements were needed.
The ring on the hub blocks the groove in the center bore that the cap snaps into. If your wheels are older, maybe they don't have a groove in the center bore?
