Unhappy Oil over-heat warning

I went for a drive today, Hwy 17 to Santa Cruz (Ca) for those who know the road.
Conditions
* 15-20 miles up a reasonable grade
* Cool day mid 60's
* for about the last 10 miles when there was room
* in 3rd gear at around 4500-5000 RPM

My needle guage did not move much at all but my LCD oil temp popped on and my big LCD screen and buzzer went off (overheat warning blalabla)

The LCD guage went up to 300 deg., just as I reached the top. Checked all the fluids everything was fine.

I didn't feel I was driving that hard or long to heat up like that??

Does that sound normal to those who know?

You would probalby have a 2004 that HAS NOT been fixed..

Relax.. this is a known issue... Take the car to the dealer and tell them what happened. There is a TSB (http://www.cadilllacfaq.com/faq/answers/tsb/index.html). GM made a small programming mistake which can be fixed at the dealer. This causes the oil temp to read too high (when in fact it is much lower).

I hover around 200-210 in normal driving and up to 225 in "spirited driving"

I hover at 225 normal driving and 250-270 in spirited driving... have to go back to the dealer, since they didn't get it right the first time

This not a problem temp, if you see it only periodically. Synthetic oils can take plenty of heat; stick with them!

MarineSS - Is your V a 2004? Realizing this is a very technical question - Do you know what the operating system number is of your PCM?

For 2004s, there is an updated operating system (number 12592433) that the dealer needs to flash on the PCM with their Tech2 tool. This will "fix" the high oil temp warning (there is no actual sensor update).

To find out the OS number requires a dealer's Tech2 diagnostic tool (my recommendation) or one of the aftermarket tuning software packages.

this fix does not actually occur in the ECM, it occurs in the gage cluster itself. Some dealers screwed the update up and had to replace the gage clusters.

No, an aftermmarket tuner cannot program this module from what I understand.

happened to me too... the dealer did not call and change the bit rate of the tech II.... Common mistake..

I hope the cluster is not on backorder.
